removing the airbox on 1987 turbo

Hi,

I need to replace the air filter on my 1987 HCI but I wonder how to remove the airbox shown on the attached picture the simple way

The simple way?  Have somebody else do it... 😅  for free.

 

It is only simple until you drop the two 10mm mounting screws. 😨

 

 

First step, stuff towels underneath to catch the hardware and your 10mm socket when they fall..

 

Loosen/remove the FBV (fuel bypass valve) and crankcase vent hose.

 

Break the bolts free, then hand-loosen them with a magnetic socket.  The old trick of applying some grease (or a bit of paper towel) helps keep the bolts and washers from flying.

 

There are two 6mm -head jubilee clamps underneath the housing...loosen those too. Mark the top & bottom.

 

Then lift the housing off.

 

One more step, according to the Service Notes:

 

"Replace in reverse order, making any necessary adjustments." 😇

Keep those towels stuffed underneath...

Its not really that difficult, just tedious.

Unless you need to search for dropped hardware or tools.

 

I almost forgot, I tape the air filter element in place, with one piece of masking tape going upwards, when re-assembling.  That way, you don't need to 'fight' with it when re-assembling.

When the hardware is almost tight, just pull off the tape. 😼
