New exhaust installed !

Recommended Posts

After a few weeks of impatiently waiting, Peter's exhaust (bosbon) and my exhaust have arrived from PUK (thanx Marcus !). It's a Larini twin exhaust model.

Apparently it won't fit directly to Peter's 89 Stevens, (will need some modification) but on my S4 it did (thanx to mech wizard Peter  )

Really nice piece of exhaust, and a big smile when we started the engine, very nice sound indeed ! I'll try to makea sound clip and post a link

Clear side and front repeaters arrived as well, will take pics tomorrow.

I can feel the difference, it's like someone took out a piece of cloth out of the exhaust : noticeable easier airflow ! And sure some performance gain ! Yet to install the K&N air filter, I wonder what that will do  ... And after that, #5 chip (yeah Marcus, you'll see my order next month or so)

for those who doubt : it's GREAT stuff, Larini !

what kinda noise are you getting, mine is really loud!! and pops and bangs all the time on over run?? do you get a steady flow from each pipe as mine seems to be maily right hand exit , do get some from left but not much>> is yours the same design as mine, http://www.lotusespritworld.co.uk/EOwners/McKenzie.html ??

NIce one, would be nice to hear the sound of the Larini. It was one i was looking at, then i got the chance to get a Remus Romulus 4 porter so i grabbed it. Won`t be installed till next year though, as it`s time for the body to come off and have the chassis redone.

so you`ll be on the tunnel run this year then

Mark,

I have the same as you, and I wouldn't say it was overly loud - also mine does not pop and bang on the overrun.

 Mine did not fit.

I think mainly because I have a non catalyst lotus. The flange from the downpipe is welded at the turbo. It is a slip on flange on bzguy's lotus. My down pipe from the turbo ends 10 cm (4") to much forward. I will check if I can loosen the flange (grinding) or drill out the hole to get a 10 cm move backwards. Or maybe I have to order the stainless non-catalyst down pipe.

Pictures are here !

a bit dark in my garage, but anyway  Aerofoil still has to be installed.

Also some pictures of the original side repeaters, I've sprayed the tips of my new orange bulbs (delivered with the clear lenses) silver, drying now, when they're dry I'll install my new clear front and side repeaters.

Link to a short video footage, sounds neat hein  It's in my garage, so sounds a bit louder than it actually is, but I like it VERY much : nice deep sounds, bit f rumble, just the sound it should have had from the beginning. And a noticeable gain in power due to air flowing much easier !

I also have a Larini exhaust on my 1990 SE, although it is a single RH exit. The sound is very nice, deep and not too loud. They can me hear coming when entering the street but nobody is complaining, I think it is because of the nice deep tones. One minor thing is that the bracket (shown on the picture with the dr pepper can) will crack on the weld near the mounting bolt which mounts to the rubber exhaust mount of the car. When mine cracked/broke I had it welded and they also made/welded a small insert plate which fits in the open area of the bracket in order to avoid future cracking.

Freek

BTW: I use the complete system of Larini INCLUDING their cat which contributes in my opinion to better exhaust levels. Running a Larini system (or sports exhaust system) without a cat makes much more noise/sound according several people I spoke with. Mine passed emission tests (APK test) without problems with the cat.

thx for the info Freek. Indeed nice sound, not too loud and not too silent, just perfect !

More eye candy : clear repeaters installed :

Took me less than 15 minutes to install them all, really piece of cake (or me just being lucky that the bulb holder for the front repeater didn't disappear into the bumper)

Looks superb imho, fits nicely the body color.

That does sound fantastic. As you say not too loud.

I have the Larini single-exit (RH) exhaust, and I'm like Mark McKenzie, mine pops and bangs all over the place, and its TOO LOUD.

I don't mind loud, but this is a 'rough' loud, there's no refinement. (Also, downunder, we have problems over 100db)

I originally thought there was something wrong with the running of the car when I put it on, (i.e running very rich, etc...) but have just had it checked by my Lotus guy, he's chekced and had it on the dyno and everything checks out - running fine.

I'm thinkng of modifying the Larini silencer a bit, to muffle the sound a tad more. Does this sound right?

(Bzguy - hope I'm not hijacking your thread)

No problem David ! Do you still have the cat fitted ? I think removing the cat will increase noise level.

I remember on my SE (empty cat) with a Romus twin double exhaust fitted, noise was much louder, don't know if it was due to empty cat or not :S

If your cat is still there and not empty, I wouldn't know how come it's too loud. In that case, you might need to modify or look for another way to decrease sound level, I'm sure some specialists over here can help you with some really good advise, my info is only guessing

Sorry - should have mentioned, I also have the Larini high-flow cat. Emissions tests say all ok, so no nasty gases coming out of the back, just lots of noise!!

(Goes alright though  )

Thanks

HI ALL

I have received yesterday the LARINI CLUBSPORT like V8 for my ESPRIT GT3,

yesterday I have fitted the new exhaust and the sound is fantastic, now this is assolutely the sound for a supercar like our ESPRIT.....the sound is very aggressive (certainly like a S4s exhaust), but this Larini model have out two like V8 and this is very nice to see!!!!!!!

About the LARINI exhaust, it's not very perfectly expecially if you see the steel exhaust finish (I don't know the exactly word), it is very rude and however I think to change with a new finishes that fit in the exhaust.......

I have seen also that in my exhaust the gas go out more more on right pipe and it after 20miles is very black but the first left pipe go out gas but less of the right and however is less hot that the other pipe....I don't know why.........let me know..........however I think that is all normal and the new exhaust after 4.500/5.000rpm when you put off the gas you can listen the BOMB...............mah....

Testing the car yesterday I have smeelled a bad smell like (cooking the toast or chips with oil.....):::))), I think that it's ok because I have tested the car at high revs and however the steel is new

thanks for your comment

It does - if you look at the pipes and how the system is constructed the right side is more free to flow than the left because of the Y junction.

What that lends to is a single exit (IE not too loud) at low revs and a rip roaring sound at higher revs when the pressure in the system increases and flow comes out more on the left side.

Larini know what they're doing with the pipes and have good rep for producing quality exhausts - imo this was one of the best ones I have seen, the welding is second to none.

The pipe ends will discolour as one side is going to be a LOT hotter than the other because of the gas flow - just swap the two over and they'll look the same OR put new tips on them.

Right what Jonathan says, although on idle I can feel as much gas on the left as on the right side, haven't tried with throttle open off course

//edit : next on the list is K&N air filter upgrade

Engine mods so far : Larini exhaust, ram air mod, chip #3, BOV (which fails mostly to open, need to sort that out),soon K&N air filter. Always had trouble with the BOV, even on my previous car : valve doesn't open, although installed correctly. Rubber ring collapsed, so I had to remove it, valve itself can be freely moved by hand, but still no swoosh :S . Checked connections, etc ... Maybe I'll need to shorten the spring ? Now it's on most loose setting. Anyone who has the BOV as sold on PUK who wants to share his spring settings ? I always hear a little swoosh (mostly from the right side) when changing gear. Now I dunno if it comes from ram air mod or BOV spring too soft ?

The I'll change my current #3 chip, but hesitating between #5 and #6 ; I'd like to have more low rpm torque, rather than high rev's, #6 chip max boost is up to 1.25 bar, but I don't need that, I wouldn't use it often. I'd don't like to kill my engine :)

Anything else to mod before I'd change to #5 or #6 ? Bigger secondary injectors ? Decat or high flow cat ?

Hi Hans

about your BOV bought from PUK, I have also fitted one bought from PUK in the summer, my BOV is alreday regulate ( I can't regulate it, because it's adaptive as Marcus said me).

Infact I have called Marcus because my BOV do a big swoosh, he have sent me a copy of how I can regulate them, but after we have see that my BOV can't be regulate and the instruction paper was for the old BOV.....however I have seen last month a S4s with the same BOV and it's like my model, so it's normal the swoosh.........if your BOV not work correctly (not do the swoosh or do little swoosh) certainly there are problem with it.....Marcus certainly can help you!!!

Hans, Have you read my PM...please answer as soon as possible

Thanks

Alessandro
