piston slap 907

Recommended Posts

Hi,

i got a good eclat with engine out recently.

so i never heared the engine running.

i did a cylinder leakage test and found out that one exhaust valve was leaking.

so took the head off.

exhaustvalve was cracked.

i inspected the cylinders. the cross drilling pattern is visible no scratches visible. so visualy the cylinders looked good.

did a measurement of the bores. all within spec.

now here comes the issue : i can move all pistons in the bore like all cylinders show a piston slap.

without measuring taking out the pistons i only could measure the top clearance which has no meanin probably but the gap between the top of the piston and the cylinder in middle position was 0,45mm

is this tolerateable or are the psitons worn too much.

i know that its always best to rebuild everything and even do all the upgrades to 2.2 and bla bla. but then i land up in 6000€ parts price.

will an engine which such moving pistons still work under normal road condistions for 20000 miles? or is it gone?

thx

Do you know how a piston is properly measured? There is a target area on the skirt from which correct measurement is taken. Gap between cylinder and top of piston is not specified.

Ok. Thank you for the reply. I hoped somebody can say if its too much if u can move the piston 0,45mm in all dorections if its installed.

Roman that's just too inaccurate a means of dealing with engine internals.
