@Steven: my fault, sorry -wrong spelling/grammar. What i meant was: all bolts of the suspension arms an engine assembly seemed to have tightened to an good torque just before i have them undone. So, as Mike wants to drive the car home 'in a hurry' (in one night from L

Short update from Yesterday:

R&B supplied me with replacement AP friction plates, so I prepared and rebuilt the clutch pack.

Care was taken to make sure the inner faces of the clutch frame were clean and smooth. Similarly the intermediate plates were sanded and cleaned to ensure that they could move freely against the pillars of the frame.

The whole clutch pack was oriented and re-assembled then loosely attached to the flywheel. The alignment tool was then inserted and engaged in the crank nose pilot bearing priot to progressively tightening the whole pack to the flywheel.

The existing metalastic gearbox mounts were not in a brilliant shape, so I installed a pair of alternative high performance mounts from Moore International. These mounts are almost identical in height, but are stiffer and hopefully harder wearing.....

In preparation for the re-installation, I took the opportunity to drain the gearbox oil.... nasty surprise.... The gearbox is supposed to contain 3 litres of TAF-X, but there was less that 1 litre - my guess is that the gear oil had never been changed

Hes washing the filth of the green machine before the next photoshoot :) Thats strange about the box oil. Like I would have assumed from those pics that box looked freshly painted and housing reassembled and to do that they would have had to drop the oil some where along the line ? Just a lick of paint huh?

Hey Kylie,

I was also very surprised in the quantity and condition of oil that came out...... it

Mike, I'm' here -no panic !

probably failed all of my 3 written test forms, so some 'mental anti depression' Lotus car work is just right for me

PS. mention that i did it wrong, as i not covered the driveshaft ends on the gearbox (or at lest not drained the oil) -so there was some oil that was run out on my left shoe (you know, the patch of oil under the car..)

All time plans ->PM :)

What's up

:)

I'm already there at home, just have to 'take a shower' -and than sit in front of the TV. With some tasty junk-food .

..hmmm *pizza pie* ....jummy jummy :(

hope it's al gone well for you !

(bear in mind: the spring/clip on the clutch fork is not 'state of the art' -same is for the RH inner driveshaft-universal joint (the one with the DIY weld). I'm sure there are more points to watch out -bud as it is only an *Engine mule* car -there should be no problems..)

where is the most amusing picture ??

..how is your coolant level, does it work :(

And if you remove and reinstall your gearbox next time -check your pedal adjustment. Maybe thats the reason (or at least one of several) that your clutch fork and the clutch is/was in that state of condition... .

:) for all projects !

Ohhh....sad to read that there was a problem with your equipment, so this means no coverage of the 'camping ground field service'.

Anyway, no matter what Kylie does think about -i like my *ugly dirty green monster frog*. It's always good to have enough luggage space in the back of your car -for tools :)

cheers!

  • 5 years later...

Apologies for ressurecting a very old thread but I thought it would be better than starting a new one....

I have finally got my V8 back on the road and it is running much better than before all the work was done, however the clutch judder that it suffered from before the work was done is still just as bad - possibly worse when in slow moving traffic - and I am suprised and very disappointed as

- clutch is new (OK rebuilt by AP specialist rather than new)

- engine mounts new

- flywheel skimmed

- gearbox has been checked and deemed to be in good nick

so I did hope that the clutch judder would be a thing of the past.

Given the work that has been done - any ideas what else could be causing it?

Other things to check?

Any advice gratefully received.....

Cheers

Jerry

How was the flywheel skimmed?

Things like brakes and clutches need pad material transferred to the metal so that the friction process is pad material on pad material, rather than pad on iron.  Sometimes they need a little bedding in.

Thanks for your help

To be honest I don't know exactly how the flywheel was skimmed, it was done by the company that rebuilt the clutch (AP specialists) so hopefully they know what they are doing.....

Car has done about 1000 mile since the rebuild so I am guessing if it was an initial bedding in problem it should  be OK by now?

Cheers

If the clutch wasn't bedded in properly, then the friction material could have been transferred unevenly leaving patches, which is where the judder comes from.

I know some V8 owners have cured their clutch judder by doing a sort of clutch burnout to slip the clutch some, and then hold the clutch pedal in to let the disks cool without touching.

  • 4 months later...

Just took delivery of my V8 Esprit after a long and protracted total restoration. I had not had much use of the car before it went away, so now I am getting used to the car properly for the first time, WOW.

However, On my third outing of getting to know Edward Esprit, gentle progress seems fine but when I tried to accelerate I got awful engine judder.

As the engine had been totally re-built I thought maybe it's a bit tight, be gentle. Anyway I took it back to Paul Matty and had it looked at. The chaps quickly identified the problem.

NOT a tight engine, NOT the clutch (which may still be a possible issue for the original entry), no very simple, water ingress into the spark plug recesses. This was dealt with, and he performs beautifully.

So just check for water in the spark plug recess, and deal with any failures in the seals.

Hope that helps, but then I'm just a novice and a new owner here.
