Smoke coming from my Direct Ignition module (coil)

Hi all,

I went to the Esprit yesterday, started it moved it out of the garage, tried to start it again and the engine turned over but would not start, I checked the fuses finding that the ECM fuse had blown. I changed the fuse to find that the car started ticking over rough, then the fuse blew and smoke came from the Direct ignition module (coil), can this be caused by anything else or is this somthing that just breaks every now and then, Please any help or advise welcomed!!!

Mick.

I've had one go but it didn't do that, it just wouldn't spark correctly.

If it's the coil pack then look for the mad ones, they're so much cheaper than Lotus ones and are allegedly better, if it's the back plate, not sure what you can do other than a Delco one (which is in effect genuine).

You could try Lotusbits to see if they happen to have one, they are more focussed on the earlier Esprits, Excels, Eclats & Elites, but occasionally have some bits.

Possibly some of the other non-franchised specialists may have a used but good one, try PNM etc.

If you want the MSD ones, it may take a while, unless you can find a local stockist (try specialist parts places for US vehicles as it's a GM fitment).

I'm pretty sure I have a used one (original not MSD) sitting in my garage, but getting it to you (if you just wanted to check that was the issue, or just run the car until you can obtain an MSD one from the states) may take a while (find it, pack it ship it etc).

OR, there's the main dealer / non-franchised but genuine parts option, probably more expensive than the MSD or used options,, but should be quicker.
