Misfire caused by incorrect timing?

Recommended Posts

Just checked my timing

I adjusted the RPM to 950 according to the manual, the snap on tool I have gives RPM reading., The Timing is now 20 and should be 10 according to the book, is this the cause of my misfire?

I am learning as i go along,

How do I adjust the timing do I loosen off the dissy slightly and give it a gentle tap?

Thanks

Chris

It certainly will not help it run correctly.

Loosen pinch bolt on dissy slightly, turn dissy (being careful not to pull it out of the splined end of the oil pump shaft). Turning it in the direction of the engine rotation retards it (which is what you want). Mark where it is now, by scraping a line on the dissy and a corresponding line on the clamp. that way if you turn it to far, or loose the setting for some reason you have a starting point where you know the car will at least run.

Chris,

Quick little tip on checking the leads. Take your Ohm meter and place it to read Ohms of resistance. Check each lead and record the resistance. There should be some. Most performance engine management guru's will tell you not to be too concerned about the resistance number but be more concerned about them all being very similar to one another. How do the plugs looks? Is the misfire constant or only at particular rpms or load? Another silly but little known fact, make sure your earth to the engine is well sorted. This is where your spark plug gets the earth source from. So if that is not clean( rust, oil, and /or grime ) it can play havoc with you. And many a time it is overlooked.
