Yes, you were just turning it over by hand, not an issue unless you leave the spanner/ socket & bar on there and then start the engine (no guesses for who has done that).

To actually tension the belt I suggest an old car tyre lever (not bike ones, car ones approx 1 1/2inches wide) and use that between the alternator and the casting. Failing that a screwdriver or thin pry bar.

Haha thankfully I didn't do that. I turned it very slightly and because I was worried I'd fudged the timing or something I turned it back the other way to correct it. Only around 1/4 to 1/2 inch movement in total. Blood amateur that I am. I'll try that technique Friday on my next day off and hope she hold charge and doesn't cut out on the way to the mot station.
