Hi,in the process of taking out the engine of my S4 Esprit and while it's out I was thinking of re painting all the red bits.On looking at my manual it looks as though I should not remove the plenum back plate from the throttle bodies ,is that right??

On my '89 Turbo (non-SE), they are gaskets.
It is easiest to remove the backplate if you first remove the entire intake manifold from the engine.

The issue is not gaskets or o-rings, it's that the throttle bodies are flow matched on a bench on assembly and presumably removing the backplates can affect the air/fuel flow. That being said, I've done it several times and haven't had any issues. Do not separate the linkage between the throttle bodies though and try to not disturb them any more than is necessary.
