Blue coating on new brake discs

A quick question regarding the blue coating that's on new brake discs - 

 

Do you clean this off before using the brake discs, and if so, how to clean it off?

 

Or is it fine to let the brake discs wear this off? I did a search but didn't find anything.

Is it truly a coating you refer to or just the anodiastion? If it's the latter it's in essence just a  metal coating a few atoms thick to prevent rust during storage in which case yo will wear it off within the first few applications of braking.

Wipe the disc with a decent brake& clutch cleaning chemical if you have one (it's often a high flash point solvent. If you don't have that then paint thinners will do or purchase a spray can of the right stuff. That way you'll remove any oil / grease residue including that put on there by handling the surface. You'll then know whatever is left can only be anodisation.

It could be anodisation, it's that kind of blue, cheers for the pointer. At first I thought it was that "engineering blue" that metal workers use but it's the wrong texture. I'll be giving the discs a final clean before fitting the pads so you're right about what ever is left over!

Hi it is an anti corrosion layer and will rub off as soon as brakes applied, I assume you bought the rear SE discs, if so same as mine cheers Steve

Hi Steve, yeah bought them ages ago, just got round to fitting them now. I just wondered if I should attempt to clean it off other than the last degrease before the pads go on. The other half thinks they should stay that colour as they go with the car!

I've also refurbed the rear calipers and just about to fit it all back on now. I'll update my hibernation thread later to night with some piccies.

Always degrease discs prior to use regardless!
