anyone ever removed it? if so how did you deal with venting the tanks? and what is the purpose of the electrical connection to it?

The electrical connection is to the solenoid that controls the flow of fuel vapour into the inlet manifold.

I relaced mine with a new one (GM part number slightly different, but cheap and easy to get.  The Fuel system on the Esprit relies on the tanks being pressurized, so I think it is more of a risk to remove it completely...
