Replacing Vacuum Pump on an 89 Turbo.

Hello.

I just purchased an 89 esprit turbo. I've been looking for almost 4 years.

I'm in Canada -Alberta and this car is a rare bird. 1 of 3 made for Canada and Puerto Reco!!! ???

Anyway's this is my first post and subtle introduction.

Car needs a belt change and the Vacuum Pump needs replacement.

Any info on my first problem. V.C Pump? You can hear it upon idle. Cartoon blurpling noise.

How to change and any tricks from the Pro's.

Thanks.

Mike

The only trick (as stated elsewhere) is that the pump/belt are mounted with 8mm Allen (hex) capscrews.

Buy yourself a set of 90 degree Allens and cut a 1/2" end off the 8mm one. Then, Insert that piece into the hex nut and use a ratcheting box wrench ("Gearwrench") to release it.

To refit mine recently I resorted to removing the pump via the two fixings (one pivot and once securing) then remove the pump from the bracket, fit bracket to car, fit pump to bracket. I'd not had to do that before when I changed the pump but perhaps I'm just not as patient now.

The vacuum pump makes that cartoon blurping noise (good description!) but get worse as it wears. Stick a vacuum gauge in circuit to make sure you need to change it.

I have no further info on this but an acquaintance with an Esprit tells me he replaced his driven pump with an electric one. Food for thought.
