S1 Project car - part 2 - the continuation

Recommended Posts

Hi Rolls,

seems to be a lot of people on the internet making up tool kits from tools they have bought. The screwdriver doesnt look long enough. Who knows about the rest. I have a few more peple to try. Someone out there has an original kit!

image.thumb.jpg.1a1b242a3f410b8041b019b9Well back to the serious stuff. Jon told me about new Wingard rear view mirrors some

time ago. So bought one. Trouble is the mount stem is different. Am in the process of

swapping it over. Someone drilled a hole in the original stem and screwed it to the head

trim! Have filled the hole and National windscreens are going to bond it back on the

glass. Dont trust any of the glues out there! Also I have a stone chip in the front screen and I havnt even driven it yet. So theyre repairing that too! Nothings easy. Did a block test using the test kit. It came back negative, no exhaust gases in header tank. Nit sure how accurate it is.

Top tip for Wingard mirrors. If you take the ball and socket apart and wish to reassemble gently heat the socket otherwise it will be very difficult to push back together. If the join is loose a bit of kitchen foil in the joint will stiffen it. Or clear nail varnish in the joint.

Brand new Wingard on the left, £10 bargain! Thank goodness for Ebay.

Lotus seemed to have changed the stem design from the first car. That stem screwed into the trim. Wingard 1107 is the mirror type.

Just got a few bits for my car from the previous owner (who sold me the car 9 years ago!). I now have the original owners manual still in the plastic wallet supplied by the garage who sold the car...

And a few more bits for the toolkit. I think I'm still missing an adjustable spanner and a small double ended spanner...

This is like gold dust to me because I'm old and sad and have no life as my wife keeps reminding me hahaha

Your mission is to find them all :)

Wow, very impressive! All I have is a photocopy of the handbook. But I do have an original Wolfrace care manual!

To help with the tool hunt is that a superslim metric spanner? What is the make of the screwdriver and how long is the box spanner?

should be easy to replicate the wallet. You may have to use your blaster on those and powder coat.

I believe there will be a day when everyone who owns an early esprit will covet original tool kits. I've been through this with other marques.  Used to laugh at people buying them. Now they are unobtanium. Name your price.

We have asked the forum and nobody has been able to produce an original, complete kit. Not one (so far anyway)....

I guess only time will tell.

As no one has got a complete original tool kit you could put any thing you want in one and who would know what is correct? There are so many period wrenches, wire screwdrivers and box spanners???All slightly different.

No I don't agree. The spanners were TW Superslim (never seen anything different used). And it's true (so far) that nobody has a complete original toolkit but you have to piece it together from what people do have (I have about 75%). The pliers were TW as well. The wire screwdriver doesn't have a make on it and may have been made by Lotus themselves? The adjustable spanner also has no make on it just Made in England. the box spanner fits the spark plug (14mm?). The spanners themselves were 19/17mm open ended and 13/10mm open ended. the very small one was possibly 4/2BA.

I have a spare 19/17mm I'm willing to part with.

I spoke to Mike Taylor at Lotus Bits and I reckon the smaller spanner is 8/10mm not 4/2BA as I previously thought (can't think of anything that's BA sized?). That means the spanners were 19/17mm, 13/10mm and 10/8mm.

Roland - Here's some spanner porn for you ;) This is the 19/17mm one that I no longer need if anybody is interested...

Fabian - you will also need to hunt down the jack, handle, bag and wheel brace...

Nope definitely 13/10mm not 100% on the other one though but Mike at Lotus Bits reckoned it was 10/8mm. You can have the spanner for a fiver all in if you want?

The box spanner is about 220mm and the tommy bar is 200mm long.

Yep its a deal! Only two left to find! Would of thought there would never be two spanners of the same size in a tool kit? If so and definately a 13/10 the other would be 8/9 or 8/7? Have seen a metric 13/12, could it be this and 10/8?

Got the rear view mirror and winscreen fixed. The chip was easy as it was very shallow. The rear view mirror is fixed very securely but very difficult to get a good finish, as its done with black resin you can see through the glass. Pads are an alternative and would probably look neater but would not be so secure, a personal choice I guess.

Have checked with two different owners and it's definitely 13/10mm. Tony K has most of the tools with his car and he's checked it but he only has the two spanners. To be honest I'm not sure mine would have come with three as there isn't enough room in the tool roll.

The previous owner of mine is going to have another look for me...

Lotus Bits don't have any :(
