Help, Throttle Cable Slack

I have lots o slack in my throttle cable, 1990 SE.

Not broken, actually looks good.....

Adjuster out almost all the way.

Can I take up the slack by using something as simple as a bicycle crimp type nut at the gas pedal to shorten the cable?

Has any one done this?

Yes it's actually easy.

The throttle cable actually has a coarse adjust and a fine adjust.

You see the fine adjust threaded stop on the top of the engine going to the throttle butterflies.

That needs to be approximately centered.

The coarse adjust is under the carpet where the cable leaves the pedal and goes into the carpet on the tunnel.

There is a small cable clamp there. The clamp holds the cable sheath. It sounds like your cable sheath has slipped.

You need to loosen the clamp, and slide the sheath back towards the engine to take out the slack. Then tighten the clamp.

Next use the fine adjust to set the tension correctly.

Actually I did look this morning at the pedal area and felt the cable sheath under the carpet, it seems as if the sheath is back as far as will go, I will look at that further, but the actual cable itself seems to have stretched. Even if I tighten up the sheath portion, it seems the cable itself will be to long.

By moving the sheath rearward, it is possible to extend the path that the cable takes by quite a bit... It makes a bigger loop.

Try it you might be suprised.

If that fails then I recommend you replace the cable, since if it has stretched, then who knows when it might break... Mine did, my friends did on the highway, he actually used some string or something to pull the throttle by hand out the window...

SURPRISE!

It worked, all my slack is gone, maybe to much.............is there an amount of slack that is acceptable, like a factory spec slack?

My adjusters front and rear are pretty much at ther limits...........next time its new cable.
