600bhp Esprit Se

I saw this guy on ebay a while ago.

Basically according to him for that money you are buying the car and the patent to producing his 'one off'? Four outlet exhaust systems for the full range of lotus esprit (rtm) vehicles, to improve looks, improve sound and increase power.

Was on ebay for a little while and didn't get much attention...I mean with so many different exhausts available, surely it would be difficult to make money from this.

Looks like a nice car though.

THe eBay listings were quite clever in wording. When you read the nitty gritty he wasn't even selling the car, just the patent! Can't make my mind up on this one......................

That is one gorgeous looking SE and when my baby is looking similar OIRO 500,000 would be considered and REJECTED!

Sick, sick SE - definately!!

I was speaking with a "young person" a couple of weeks ago and he kept refering the cars as "sick". I was very tempted to tell him to use words correctly. Maybe I'm getting old ?

Right then, said Fred.

Yeah, when you say "sick" do you mean something brought up after too much beer or is that "sick" as in something good? I'm 25 and I don't even understand

Looked at the add, is it me or does the rear shot of the Esprit look like it was taken on a council estate? I mean check out the s****y concrete drive and the old-world window frames.....plus the shot of the car next to a (warehouse?) looks dodgy, even worse with the rotty/doberman in shot....Think the guy may have the barryboys delusions of grandure ie. a big bore "angry bee" exhaust, induction kit and a cheap set of alloys does not a world-beating supercar make

Nice looking Esprit though!

I sent the advertiser the following:

Hi,

I was curious about the car - you say it's a "full race version", what do you mean by that? Also, the fsh, do I assume the history has been fully stamped up by Lotus, or have you used specialists? If so, who have you used?

If I'm to be shelling out half a mill as a future business prospect, I'd like to know the car I could use to demonstrate the product is in good condition.

Kind regards,

Tim Shaw

OK, the man has replied, lets hear what he has to say:

Hi Tim,

Thanks for your interest.

First of all: The car is in Fabulous Condition Throughout. I have

owned/cherished this car for 15 years & have always kept the car in a heated

garage.

Mileage/FSH:

The car has a genuine 33,000 miles with all previous mots & service history by

Lotus.

Granted Patent:

I have a Granted Patent Entitled: " Four Outlet Exhaust Systems For The Full

Range Of Lotus Esprit (RTM) Vehicles, To Improve Looks, Improve Sound & Increase

Power ".

Full Race Version:

There are 3 Different Performance Versions of our Stainless Steel Four Outlet

Exhaust Systems:

1. Sport Version = Can Increase Turbo Boost Etc To Give An Extra 20% Bhp

Increase.

2. Road / Race Version = Can Increase Turbo Boost Etc To Give An Extra 50% Bhp

Increase.

3. Full Race Version = Can Increase Turbo Boost Etc To Give Up To 100% Bhp

Increase.

How This Works:

Basically (To Cut The Long Story Short) All Of The Standard Lotus Esprit Exhaust

Systems: Strangle / Prevent The Turbos From Working Any Where Near There Full

Potential.

Lotus were originally saying to me: If you change the exhaust system or increase

the turbo boost in any way, the check engine light will come on.

Therefore After Much Trial & Testing My Partner & I Were Very Successful & The

Results Were Basically (To Cut The Long Story Short) As Follows: " Improved

Looks " Improved Sound & Increased Power ".

The Sound Is Like Nothing You've Heard Before !

The Looks Are Of A PROPER TRUE SUPERCAR with 4 PIPES !

The Power Is AGAIN: That Of A PROPER TRUE AWESOME SUPERCAR !

I was actually invited to Lotus Cars Ltd in 1995, where my car was tested around

their race track & to be perfectly honest, they was So Excited / Immpressed,

They Forgot That I Was There To Sell Them The Idea For £1,000,000.00.

They were Blown Away & Kept comparing My Car to a Full Race Ford GT40 which had

previously been raced around their track in the same way.

Then Back The Board Meeting:

At that time I only had a Patent Application, which they were not convinced that

a Patent Would Actually Be Granted To Me.

I of course knew that it would be, so my position was: Well If You Want To Wait

Another 3 Years Until My Grant, It Won't Be 1 MILL Then, It Will Be

£20,000,000.00. To which they replied: Well OK Let's See If You Get The Patent

Granted First Then.

That Was It Meeting Over.

Then 3 Years Later On The Actual Day That I Had Received Conformation From The

Patent Office, That I Had Been Granted A Patent Entitled As Above, I Phoned

(Whilst Celebrating) Rodger Burton at Lotus & Told Him The News, I Also Told

Him: IT'S NOW 20 MILLION MATE, TAKE OR LEAVE IT !.

They Of Course Were Gutted, End Of Story.

Since Then: The Lotus Esprit (As You Know) Has Now Been Discontinued.

Luckily However: There Are Still Plenty Of Esprits Still Around, Which The Dream

Now Of Course: Would Be To UPGRADE ALL OF THEM !

Best regards

Ok for the technically minded amongst you here is the patent - you decide whether it is worth half a million.

Note this is public information so I am not breaching any laws here (I think!!)

I can easily see that will increase the power output of an Esprit by 100%. I can also easily see how pigs fly and I had a drink with Elvis on his bus on the moon yesterday :wallbash:

Is that a patent? I'm no expert, but it just looks like the application to me. At the bottom are documents considered to be relevent with lots of X's by the side which, if I'm reading it right, denote lack of novelty or inventive step......................am I right?

Ok, it continues. He still thinks I may be a potential buyer. I basically told him I'd shove his wildly exaggerated figures in front of Kimbers to see what his old man would think.....I think this guy is another Tiegan.

I told him he'd be pushing it to get over 300bhp from a 910 (hence the switchover to the V8 after the Sport 300 and the S4s.....am I right?) his justification is that he's seen "loads" of Cossies/Sierra's on 2000CC lumps pushing out in excess of 550bhp, yet still offers no explanation as to the supposed dramatic power increases. I also reminded him that at 100%+ on an SE (so around the 600 he claims) the gearbox would be a lump of useless shredded cogs.....he says I obviously know nothing about gearboxes. So basically he's contradicted his claim that his exhaust system will uprate an SE to 600bhp. Oh he says I'm a wombat too. Then asks if I'm a genuine buyer. Way to do business!

I replied with this:

As a matter of fact I am genuine, I don't want to see 500 large wanked up a wall. I am a bit suspicious you get so defensive in the face of a grilling regarding the claimed performance increases your product gives. Ok then, I'm an unwritten book. Explain to me how you managed to get this huge power increase, as you've basically said it's not just through the use of your exhaust system. If I'm to showcase this sort of thing, I want and need to know.

I'm curious, if a patent is applied for, does the applicant actually have to PROVE his patent does what he claims it can? (I notice there is no mention of 600bhp anywhere on the app...)

Patents, have to have some basic data that backs up their claim. We have patent attorneys on all our drug projects at work to make sure we keep out intelluctal property space free to work in. I would reckon that this could easily be challenged at the patent office because most ways of boosting the performance in a car a well understood and so if he produced details of his method it would become "Obvious" in legal speak. I struggle to see the novelty in this.

I bet lotus with a couple of engineers and pattent attourneys could bust this in a week. Patents are challenged every week and are often overturned when experts tear the details apart. Our company is always in courts fighting against Generic Drug companies all over the world.

He just seems a tin-pot inventor.

Also if you think about it every major sports car player has engineering alerts set up for this kind of thing with engineers checking them out. We do teh same for chemistry /drug patents. If it was a genuinely new and novel way to extarct 100% more bhp out of a car then someone would have bought this patent ages ago or busted it using a fsat follower engineering project.

Look at Dyson, with his cyclone twirly suction system, thats all patented but look on the market , every other vacuum manufacturer has something similar.
