Discs And Pads For The Rear

Recommended Posts

Can you recommend what rear Discs and pads would be suitable for a 1988 Esprit Turbo, had a look and the rears are running a bit thin! Went to the motorfactors, "sorry we dont do em for that" So I'm a bit lost as far as what I can get.

just so you know, you really should fill out your country or location...

There were many differences between cars by year and location. So always best to explain which car and which country when asking questions.

For instance the UK 1988 Esprit had the Renault transmission with outboard rear brakes, but the 1988 USA Esprit turbo had the Citroen/Maserati transmission and inboard rear brakes...

If you want cheap / good quality replacements look to ebc

I run them on both my cars and I am perfectly happy with them vs the price - if you can try and get the ones without the dimples.

Give south west Lotus a call or any of the other specialists on :

they are fully equipped to help you out !

Do you run stock springs and dampers?

If so go for pads with the same frictions like stock replacements pads.

If you have harder than stock suspension. You need lower friction rear or a reduser on thr rear breake circiut.

Because the front end will not dip that much anymore.

Blimey you have got me there!, Looked underneath and it is running on Pro-tech Dampers, they any good? Look like they are adjustable.

I just replaced fronts and rears after talking to Porterfield Enterprizes. I told them I wanted very aggressive brakes and we decided on the following:

Fronts were HB245 with Hawk Brakes compound HT-9 full race

Rears were AP-97 with Raybestos ST-43 compound full race

I absolutely love these brake now. They do the trick nicely. I used to race stockcars and know the value and performance of good brakes. These do the trick for $280. Brake feel is great; very controllable with good feedback on the pedal and is even throughout pedal pressure. They really work well. Under very hard braking you can even lock up those large rear tires at 40mph if you really try.

Now for the Track day at Buttonwillow, CA

Hope this helps you and others. Email me with questions if you wish.

I have an 88 esprit with protech dampers on and i use the ebc drilled and grooved discs with the green stuff pads. I also have ebc on the front but with the red stuff pads on to stop the brakes from cooking if used hard. Best place I found for price and availability was sj sportcars tel:01363777790 Hope that helps cheers chris

Thanks for all the help, I'll look into getting this sorted. I'm currently learning the art of ownership, windows play up, battery now flat etc....

EBC pads and plane disc are ok.But the grooved stuff they have are not working at all.We tried this on a MR2 and it was much better using plane disc.

I belive the only reason to sell this grooved disc is that the look like racing brakes. And sell a lot of pads because they wear out 2-3 times faster than normal.

Got the Elise Brembo set up on the rear and Pagid Blue RS-4 pads. EXCELLENT

I've had Hawk, EBC reds and Mintex C-tech all round and up front on the Hi-Spec front PNM upgrade - i'd go back to EBC redstuff up front - just suits the way i drive i guess.

Although Bibsy did approve of them on a test run - so i'll be getting them back on.

Btw i have 89 SE so maybe this is of no use...

I had Porterfields on my last Esprit...they felt good, but were VERY noisy. The Hawks I just put on my Mustang are quiet, relatively dust free, and feel good. I plan on using those for my S4s.

Completely agree re grooved discs, the manufacturers (or some do) state grooves are to help reduce glazing , of pads and discs, so that may be great if that's yuor issue. If however braking force is the issue, grooves simply reduce the friction area available, so the disc has to rotate more times to dissipate the same amount of energy.

I've got 309mm discs on the front of my Turbo, with Prodrive pads and 4 pot calipers, the nose REALLY dips even with the pro tech shocks, so much so i'm having to uprate the back brakes to balance it out.
