Fuel light coming on but I have fuel...

So this one is rather straightforward in guessing there's a different meaning for when this happens but yesterday my fuel light came on and stayed on the entire drive while I had about half a tank.

I decided to fill up anyway even though I had recently and then later that day with a full tank it came on and stayed on again...

It doesn't come on right away so it's off after a restart but then comes back.

Is there a different meaning when the fuel light comes on like this or am I just finding another electrical gremlin to deal with?

Sounds like you have a dodgy fuel level sender or connection.  You`ll find that on the RH fuel tank.  On the earlier cars it`s a bobbin float type device.

They then moved to a cylinder with a sliding float type of sender.

Wouldn't that also affect the gauge, which he says is working normally?

Cheers,

There are multiple connectors on the old style sender.  That could be part of the issue.

There is a relay type thing that smooths out the fuel gauge action (so it doesnt flop around when going over a bump).  I think the light is on that circuit, I wonder if that relay could have an issue.  I ended up removing mine, fuell level indicator on the gauge moves around real time and the low fuel light does not come on - otherwise no issues that I have noticed.  I beleive there is a wright up on how this fuel level delay works in the awesome relay info threads.
