The songs in Cabaret were totally in context with no one singing where they should not have been, the films sub plot was really clever (the rise of nazi germany) and Jole Grey singing "money" was one of the highlights of the film which probably gained him his best supoorting actor oscar. I agree some musicals are just not for me, most of them in fact but not Cabaret..

Southern Comfort - Interesting film, good cast but I'm a bit shocked at how loony then went after 2 days in the field, loony enough to start killing each other. One things for sure, I'm not going camping in Louisiana!

Films are stories (mostly with words, and occasional song) and thats it. end of. NO Documdramas, NO musicals

For Sci Fi I would like to nominate a little known film by Gerry Anderson, made in 1968 called "Doppleganger" or as it was renamed for the American market "Journey to the Far Side Of The Sun" Story is a bit ropey but the special effects were Oscar nominated, and only lost out to a film called "Marooned" whose effects were no where near as good.

Good one, and Gerry got to use all his cast off sets and costumes making "UFO" a few years later!

Thats right Mark. I believe the cars used in the film and later UFO are owned by the Cars of the Stars museum in Keswick, based on Ford Zodiacs with Escort engines. One was owned by DLT for a while in the 70's

Haven't seen dead mans shoes, but from the tone of the comments it sounds a bit like Twin Town (set I think in Cardiff). Odd film with one of Rhys Ifans early performances. Very memorable end.

With all disney/kids films, the problem is some of them are really really good (Monsters Inc, Toy Story, Shrek, etc etc but if you have kids you can relay every word of the script even when drunk and falling asleep, you have to watch them so many times. As for Musicals - I shall leave all parents with the nightmare that is Beauty and Beast and the Little Mermaid. Great films, great scores, great scott but I've seen them too much.

What did people think about V for Vendetta. I have seen such mixed emotions/revues about this, and yet I thought it wasn't bad. (I was a fan of Alan Moore's comics). After Holywood killed Judge Dread, I was more than a little wary about V.

Julia Roberts = A whacking great hollywood smile that can well up a few tears

and look a bit fragile at will. Made that 'Erin...' film that albeit milked these 'talents',

does not make everything this wooden clothes horse does a work of huge talent.

Oceans 11, oh look she's walking down the stairs smiling, but wait, a bit later on she'll

be crying and looking a bit fragile, amazing!!! Just like in every film she has ever done.

The woman is so talented.

Hugh Grant = A bumbling but polite man who tries his best but ends up in humourous

situations, best served with a wooden femail lead like Julia roberts or Andie Mcdowel.

He's a bit like a very, very, very, watered down Richard E Grant, who also plays the same

character in every film, but with just a hint of depth.

It's a chick flick.

I've got a Bose surround system and it sounds just amazing on 80% volume, I'm too scared to take it to 100!

There are 3 films I've watched straight away after the first watch as they we so good as this is one of them.

Others would be The Matrix and Pulp Fiction.

Paul. There's a place for all kinds of movies! I hate moronic Horror films (which mean 90% of them) but like films like Notting Hill, Wimbledon and you've got mail. I can't stand rubbish remakes like Titanic or Posiedon yet like such sentimental films as Fried Green Tomatoes.

As for the Shining. I turned it off after an hour and went and did something more useful like trimming my nails. Damned site more interesting as well.

This thread will have so many different views and thats a good thing cause we're not all the same.

And I'm prob one of the few people in the world who hasn't watched ET and doesn't want to!

As resident pedant, can I clarify this as meaning Episodes IV - VI (A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi). Also, we're talking the original films, not the 1997 'digitally remastered' versions (like ITV's just shown over the past three weekends) where George Lucas used CGI to add cute critters, background scene clutter, redundant scenes, touched up the lasers, explosions, and light sabres, etc ... technically clever, but all so unnecessary We'll use the Laserdisc releases as the gold standard, if you like

you played me that Gun Fight scene from heat on your Bose system. Superb rumble and detailing of the pinkling of the ejected cartridges from the guns. I like what Bose do with speakers.

Talking of cinematic systems show us yours (or describe it).

I have a Yamaha DSP-A5 home cinema Amp (~10 yeards old and still rocks). My fronts are Kef Q15.2 bookshelf speakers, the centre is Kef Model 100 Reference Speaker (again with Uni-Q drivers), the rear speakers are Kef Eggs, the sub is a REL Quake.

The Kef Uni -Q drivers are a different configuration to normal speakers as the tweeter is sat in the middle of the midrange drivers.

The weekness of the system is that the sensitivity of the rears is lower than the fronts and centres and so need more power to get equivalent sound volume. The amp can send an additional +10db to the rears to aid balancing. A more expensive amp would be able to refine this tuning more. The difference is slight now and you are more affected by your seating position in the lounge than the speaker configuration.

The scene in the new king kong (too long and boring to be a good film, entertaining none the less) where he has the woman in his nest getting all angry sorts out the cinematic systems. Lots of base growl and high pitched screaming to sort out acoustically. Borrow the film if you havent seen it as its a good sound test scene.

Other good scences would the one in heat as Bibs described, any of the space battle scenes in the star was films, the lobby scene in matrix. The scene in Toy story where Buzz is on the moon (the start I think) is another cracker to test to see if your system is acoustically good. Lots of directional sound.

Apocalypse Now Redux (yes, the full nearly 4 hour version!) has to be included, and for the sci-fi (well sort of sci-fi) that has to be Stalker by Tarkovsky. Again, set aside 4 hours, and if your Russian ain't no good get the pause/rewind button ready as the subtitles are hard to read! Both classics

It's like they got together with a few beers and did the commentry dubbing,

it's very funny and i think i've watched it as much as the screen version.

(FYI The pheonix nights series 1 & 2 cast commentry is so funny that it's

like getting twice as much from the discs too).

by 'the first three starwars' i did indeed (and hoped you would assume) mean the three

we all grew up with. Although i like the way 'Revenge of the sith' has so many links

to episode IV. Sadly, the original and even the mastered releases of 4 - 6 have

so many quotes inconsistant (leia can remember her mum, yoda taught Obiwan etc)

with the prequels that at times when you rewatch the original three you are thinking

'no you didn't' or 'no it wasn't'...

A month or so ago I bought the old spaghetti western Clint Eastwood films, Fist full of Dollars, A Few Dollars More & The Good the Bad & the Ugly. Absolute classics. Now what I found fascinating is they a filmed in such a Tarrantino way that they feel very modern, just as though they were made only a few years ago.

I remember Tarrantino once saying in an interview a lot of his inspiration came from these films & only after you go back & watch them is this very obvious. Its just little things like the camera angles, the silent moments where nothing happens but you can feel the tension & then
