If tax has expired on a vehicle, and you have not declared it SORN. Does anybody know the procedures and timescale then taken to enforce a fine? Are you notified after a week? a month? Two months? or does a fine just arrive through the letterbox post haste?

You should recieve an acknowlegment letter within a month after declaring it SORN but unsure what happens if not declared.

The car needs to be taxed or declared SORN by the first day of the month after your current tax expires. However the DVLA who can issue a civil fine for not doing this will give you fourteen days before issuing said fine.

The DVLA carry out a computer check each month to identify those vehicles without a valid tax disc. Keepers who fail to re-license their vehicle (or declare SORN) will incur an automatic penalty of

I think you are also liable for any back tax for the period between being taxed and declaring SORN

I got a fine - even though they didn't remind me.

The GT2 wasn't taxed when I bought it so I declared it SORN when I tx'd the ownership over.

Every year it expires and you have to tell them (car HAS to be in 1 of 3 states - On road, SDORN or scrapped).

It's upto YOU to make sure that declation is upto date if not it's a

Yes Howard is right. When I bought me SE there was a problem with the registration document and I couldn't tax it even though I wanted to, I also assumed that because the previous owner had SORNed the car everything would be Ok till it was re-taxed. However as soon as a car changes hands the SORN is canceled, something the nice lady at the DVLA just happened not to mention when I called them for advice. I ended up having to pay an entire months back tax at the top rate and a bit on top and the car was only un-taxed for a bit over two weeks. What a bunch of B*******
