Monsterpipe!

Recommended Posts

Well, I got bored and made a new exhaust for the beast.... Umm, a little louder than I had planned, I'll get a clip up soon, but here it is. 3 1/2" pipe from the turbo back! Totally hand built! Turbo sounds sick on full throttle and boost! Having the standard turbo rear valence sure helped out here! Barely fits thru the opening.

Here's a little taste of what she sounds like. I'll get some of it on the dyno tomorrow!

The outlet of the valence is 4" and the pipe is 3.5" !! I have a good friend who is a welder and he has taken keen interest in helping with my car! Good to have friends! It is a tad loud but I'll try to get a clip of the car running and with the throttle cranked!

Looks good, bet its bloody loud! but not knowing a thing about exhausts. I thought exhausts helped with back pressure which makes the engine run correctly? is that not right? When I have had other cars with holes in there exhausts (blowing) they have been down on power.

The manifold is where the pressure needs to be on a turbo car, cracks in that cause a massive lack of power and the turbine blade's resistance provides back pressure to help close the exhaust valves. After the turbo, back pressure is irrelevant and you just want to gasses to exit as quickly as possible.

 OMG! - what have you created there Artie! :(

That sounds incredable. I wont ever complain about my exhaust being a bit on the loud side again. :(

That's loud !! vibrates my study, I love it. My only resevation is, having had some misunderstandings with Mr Plod in the past, I'm reluctant to give him proir warning of my imminent arrival!!.

Wow! That sounds awesome! I've been thinking about decatting my Magnaflow exhaust system for a while now. While I don't think it will be as loud as your exhaust (bigger muffler) your video gives me some idea what to expect.

You need to make a video of your Esprit driving with that exhaust. I'm very curious what it sounds like on the open road. I bet it sounds wonderful!!!

It does sound awesome, I'll get some video of a fly by! I planned on videoing the dyno runs from yesterday but got to the dyno only to discover the battery in my camera was dead!

Art you have created a monster. All I can say is that sounds so bad a$$. You can hear the Esprit tearing the air apart and the best thing is that you can hear the turbo spooling down after you hit the throttle AWESOME!

Hi Artie,

nice job! We made it from titanium, 3 1/2" pipe from the turbo to the end. She sounds like hell!!!

Graham,

It's cool when I start the car from cold, as the manfold heats up you can hear the turbo start to wind up, sounds like a turbine engine in an M1 Abrams tank!!!

Thanks Jason! It's a little archaic but it works and the engine really sounds nice. It sounds like a viper with a custom exhaust when idling!

I'd love a titanium one for mine.. imagine the weight saving!!

Only one question though.. isn't there an issue with reduced back pressure affecting the turbo?

I'm sure I've said this before on the forums in the past, but I remember in my younger days reading about a guy with a Sierra RS500 Cosworth eating about 20 turbos, because the exhaust had such low back pressure it kept rupturing the oil seals.

I could well be wrong though, and I'm sure turbo technology has moved on since then.

The exhaust once fell off my Escort RS Turbo years ago.. on the drive home, it sounded superb.. you could hear every noise the turbo was making, spooling up and down.

Ace..

Incidentally, has anyone ever seen the exhaust arrangement on a TVR Cerbera? It looks like something out of a water treatment plant! Nast big cast iron thing, with huge flanges and m10 bolts holding it together.

Karluk,

Thanks, I think I'll keep the can for now! My wife would shoot me if it was louder than it is.

Glyn,

Not sure your friend wasn't killing the turbos because he was just running a factory turbo and trying to make too much boost. This often happens and the excess rpms on the turbo just don't bode well for longevity. I have an RX7 with twin 51mm turbos and they have well over 100K miles on them(hard track miles mostly) with no oil seal failures. Oil seal failure usually occurs from debris in the oil, too much oil pressure(sometimes aftermarket turbos need an oil restrictor) or just worn out from high miles.

I'm sure you're right. I only remember reading it probably 15 years ago!

I've got a WC turbo on mine. It did come with the restrictor/filter thing on it, but it wouldn't mate with my oil line so I took it off.

No problems yet though thankfully!

Ace exhaust though.. :)

Cheers Glyn, my WC turbo doesn't have a restrictor either! I love it, ported the exhaust housing and outlet and spools a couple hundred RPM earlier than before.
