Yep... lovely and clean is the way we like it

Todays update:

Tappets had been tagged for each bank and cam:

The crank was put in a known position and the camshafts were removed. Each tappet was then

cleaned, oiled and popped into place. RH Bank exhaust tappets oiled and ready for the camshaft:

LH Bank inlet:

Once the camshaft end-float was checked, the caps were torqued down and new oil seals were pressed

into place:

The valve timing was next - with the fitting of the timing disc/pointer and following the procedure

as set-out in the Manual. Once the timing was confirmed, the tensioning procedure followed:

The MOP was checked for both inlet and exhaust:

The valve timing was then double checked using the tolerance pins:

Job done - with the cambelts now sorted, tomorrow I

My intercooler project has been going very slow, too much consulting work! Anyway, my fabricated compressor ducts (up pipes) are alomost done. What do you use for a thermal barrier on them and why? I've looked at a wrap and there is just no room or way to make the wrap comform to the compressor ducts, so a really good thermal coating is the only way. Exhaust coatings (i.e. Jet Hot) could be used, but I wonder if you found something better. Please let me know.

Yes - the upgraded engine will be going into an Esprit. The owner of that engine has some special plans for it

I have some more interesting 918 engines to build once this standard one is finished.

The current plan for this engine is to initially install it in Sport350 #032 (ex-Danny Waugh car).

This will provide a great way of running-up the engine and also breathe life back into that car.

The engine is now complete and will be prepared for storage just as the last one - hot marine oil.

Hi, Mike. Got to the "continuation of the rebuild" party a bit late, but found it just as fascinating as ever. My "idiot du jour" question(s) for you concern the intermediate shaft chain drive tensioners.

1. What holds them in place, and allows them to be tensioned? Is it strictly vertical position "wedging?"

2. Is the asymetrical shape (one has a curved surface against the chain [taking up the slack I imagine], the other a flat one) a function of the direction of the shaft/chain rotation?

3. What are the snubber blocks made of, and how long do they last, since they appear to be in direct contact with the chain at all times?

4. Are they sitting in a pool of oil (once the front cover is on), or is there an oil jet aimed at them somehow?

Lastly, having seen your pic of the "upgraded" engine (the one completed prior to this one) on the truck "headed north," have you indicated its destination elsewhere on the thread, or it it a "secret" for now? Is this merely a "ploy" to throw us off while you sneak it into the 350? Just kidding.

Mike, i like that John has this special talent to answer his questions himself... .

You can spank me -Bud as I'm just in the same process of work -i will answer some points:

1) pre set position on engine build, than tighten the screws -one on each bracket is an 'long type' hole..

2) yes

3)plastic, and even i will reuse them on my engine (with some minor rework..)

4) it is an fine mist of oil, that comes from the chain..

And thanks for the explanations, Gunther. I "expanded" your shot of the snubber blocks, and could clearly see the the attachment screws. I panned around the rest of the (upside down) engine block, and was able to see individual atoms. How many megapixels does your camera have anyway!!!?
