OMG! OMG!

I don't believe it! I really don't... These bl**dy switches have been bugging me for so long - two years - that I just had to have another look and thanks to @Giniw for prompting me with his thanks for the Leyland part numbers above.

I HAVE FOUND A CROSS REFERENCE

I decided to look at lorry and bus dash switches from the 80's and by pure accident Renault on Google Images threw this up (from a Hungarian blog of all places):

In the middle - rear fog, hazard and HRW switches. Yup, it's a Renault Espace 1. 1984-1991 which fits perfectly with the Esprit timeline for the large binnacle. I'm guessing that Torrix/TRW must have kept stock up until 1997 or Lotus did. Or Reliant... Whatever. I don't think that there are many first edition Espaces left around or in the scrappies but it is a clue that PSA probably did use them on other models, which I kinda have had a few hints at before. I'm just so happy that they were indeed used on a high volume mainstream vehicle. More work - targetted now - to follow.

Thanks to the guys on the Scimitar forum, they gave me some leads to more Renaults of the period and yes, they were widely used on many models. Also thanks once again to @Giniw who has found that they are in plentiful supply in France*, not surprisingly.

A summary then - well for now. There are three types of switch and one blanking cap:

Heated rear window/front fog/front driving/rear fog (cap legends differ depending on application)
Torrix TBA
TRW TBA

Single pole on/off with five contacts, although only four are used. Lotus wiring diagrams:

Hazard warning (there is a variant with a red ring insert around the triangle)

Double pole on/off with nine contacts, although only eight are used. Lotus wiring diagram:

* The Lotus parking/headlamp switches are something of an outsider in this, they belong to the same range but I haven't found that type used on any Renaults - well not yet. There are a lot to go through and I will continue when I have some more time. That also applies to the more common types, they may well be on other models. Possibly Renault trucks or buses...

PS thinking about this, you could adapt a hazard warning switch for parking/headlamp use, just change the caps/legend inserts over and pins 10 and 2 go unused. Should be plug compatible...

Well, Peter Stevens designed it, which is why a lot of things are common. Wing mirrors are the same Citroen CX that we use on the Esprit!

Illumination is no issue, there are interchangeable coloured plastic screens inside, at least in my 92 SE Model
