4 year service

Sorry if this has been done to death, but i have searched with no luck.

My car is due its 4 year service in the next couple of months. I have had a quote from silverstone which came in at about £750 plus vat. Has anyone had it done for less than this as it seems pretty steep, although i do understand that this is the biggie.

Air filter is probably 15 mins tops, coolant maybe 30mins? Infact the whole service looks very simple..

Taken from the Silverstone web page

During a regular service, Lotus Silverstone will spend close to 3 hours not just replacing components of the lubrication system but we also inspect critical components of your high performance sports car.

Additional items are due at the following intervals:

2 years / 18,000 miles - Pollen filter, clutch / brake fluid

4 years / 36,000 miles - Transmission oil manual and IPS, air filter, coolant

6 years / 54,000 miles - Spark plugs

At a 4 year service you'll get the usual service plus brake/clutch fluid change, gearbox oil change, air filter/pollen change along with the usual service. Price sounds about right to me.

What are people's thoughts about moving away from main dealers on the evora? There is a great independent lotus specialist in Burton on trent that I used to take my elise to. I might give him a call and see how the price compares to Silverstone

yes it seems a lot for what is involved but it is a high performance car not a Ford Focus.

Look at it this way, if you were buying a used one, would you choose the one with full main dealer service history or the one without.

With you on that, it's a long way from Porker prices and given the performance of the car it seems reasonable. I don't know how much you'd save by going to a specialist as opposed to a non main dealer but I'd hazard a guess it wouldn't be much and it would reflected in the price when you come to sell and possibly effect the desirability of that particular  car.

Hmm, that's a tough call. The indie is probably just as good a mechanic but the experience levels on an Evora I'd suggest are lacking... Silverstone will know the Evora inside out, rather them open things up!

Stamp in the book always a bonus when it comes to selling...

Personally I wouldn't buy an Evora without main dealer history. I would however consider an Elise/Exige with an Indie history. I used a specialist with my old Porker.. They were better than a certain Porsche main dealer who were thieving scoundrels :-0

My 4 year is in Oct, will be interesting if owners do start to go off piste!

Out of interest how much odd you pay for the three year service?

I paid £380 including VAT at JCT Leeds and was quoted a virtually identical price at Bell & Colvill. This was last month, £500 extra seems quite a lot more.

Just had my 4 year service done at Silverstone.  The car was with them for 2 days.

 

The price was £0  but part of the deal when I bought the car was that the 4 year service would be done, they forgot to do it before I picked up the car.  But they owned up and it went in a couple of weeks later.  It was ideal as it allowed me a long test drive to identify niggles

If B&C charging under £400 for a service they must have revised pricing. They were quoting me circa £460 , £650 & £850 for the constituent parts of the service schedule (inc SELOC discount).

Yep, they quoted me £460 but lowered it to around £400 on the phone. The JCT price was £440 before haggling I think.

I was thinking about trying somewhere else next time.  Took mine to Westover Lotus in Poole last week, 3 year service was £491 including VAT, so price was about right.  But the last couple of times I've been there I've been less than impressed with their customer service as they've messed me about on both occasions.

Mine had its 4 year service in October 2013, a couple of weeks before we bought it. This was performed by Strattons and included:

 

Engine oil change, oil filter, pollen filter, air filter, transmission oil change, coolant change, brake & clutch fluid change & screenwash.

 

Total price: GBP 615 (of which GBP 360 labour + GBP 255 parts) + VAT = GBP 739.

Comments about the service pricing being reasonable for the type of car are valid and I never would (or would advocate), cutting corners on servicing/maintenance, but actually the type of car being worked on is largely irrelevant.

 

The key consideration is (or should be) the parts cost and the actual work required. Considering that the Evora runs a Toyota Powertrain and has less work involved than certain Elise models then it would be reasonable to expect that the servicing cost in the same garage would be no higher. Less work should equal less cost.

 

Why for instance would a fluid change be any higher than for a VW/Merc/BMW etc within their networks?

 

Considering the price variations in the network, it says to me that the costs are being set around value of car and what the specific dealer feels they can get away with, rather than an assessment of the job. high value car = higher cost servicing.

 

nb - there is about a 30% cost discrepency in the Lotus dealer network between the lowest price and highest price dealer where I can find thier costs. Other service items are even more disparate, for example Geo at one dealer - £250 - another £120.

Having just had another look at the silverstone quote, it is based on over 7 hours labour (accounting for over £500 of the exc vat price). Does that sound reasonable? I'm no mechanic, but it seems quite high to me.

Main dealer up to £100 hr is usual. Indie probably £50/60. The mechanic probably gets £20 of that, which is why often the best guys set up on their own and why the indie network is so good.

I rely on, and trust, Steve Williams in Maidenhead (He races Evora's).  

 

My 4 year service, plus MOT, plus resealing flapping front Clam was less than £500.

So true. An annual on my old 911 was never less than about £1300/1500..

Even my old Abarth's 4 year service was more expensive than our Loties!
