Many of us know The Beatles song A Day in the Life, the final track of their 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
And for, probably, the very few of us who don’t know the tragic London-based story behind one of the band’s best-known songs here it is:
John Lennon's lyrics for A Day in the Life were mainly inspired by newspaper articles of the time, including a report about the death of Guinness heir Tara Browne.
On 18 December 1966, 21-year-old Browne died when his Lotus Elan crashed into a parked vehicle near the junction of Redcliffe Square and Redcliffe Gardens.
He was under the influence of alcohol and other drugs.
Nineteen-year-old model Suki Poitier was the only other person in the car. She survived the accident and said Browne had swerved to absorb the impact of the crash and in doing so saved her life.
Browne was a well-known figure in the London’s Swinging Sixties scene and friends with a number of celebrities including, David Hemmings, Terence Stamp, Brian Jones, Mick Jagger, Marianne Faithfull and The Beatles.
In 1981, Poitier and her husband, Hong Kong businessman Robert Ho, died in a car crash in Portugal.
