Steering Rack

Recommended Posts

According to one article on Lotus Esprit World, the steering rack on the SE needs to be replaced every other year. Is this true? Sounds excessive even for an exotic!

Thanks,

Thanks,

No that's completely wrong.

My 89SE steering rack lasted 65,000miles and 14 years, and probably only got loose because I put larger Esprit V8 sized wheels on.

Thanks Vulcan Grey. While keeping on top of maintenance is important for any high performance vehicle, the urban legends about the Esprit probably keep many would be owners away.

Depends on how and where you drive. The SE is a manual rack, so if you do a lot of tight parking (for example) you'll end up with big muscles and a tired rack. I'm just on my third at 135,000 miles, but it's not an expensive part or repair bill in the grand scheme of things.

Where on LEW does it mention this?

If it's in a roadtest articles or buying guides from magazines, then you shouldn't believe everything it says in there, most are ill informed and plenty of information is incorrect. The have been reproduced as they were published.

We state this at the top of the roadtest & buying sections.

The articles below have been reproduced by Lotus Esprit World as they were printed. Many have 'errors' in that have not been corrected.

If you've seen it else where, please supply the page and we'll check it over.

As for steering rack wear, as said above, depends on use and the wheels and tyres you have on. Also rebuilt racks don't last as long as new racks and from what specialist have told us, aren't worth the savings.

How hard would it be for a custom or machine shop to fabricate one?

We no longer service the manual rack but have transferred supply to Miles Wilkins of Fibreglass Services one of our Aftersales Dealers who specialises in the mature models!

His number is 0044 + 1243 554422.

Of course any rack you buy from miles is between you and is not endorsed by the Factory.

Part # refs would of been E082H4020F RHD and 4021F if you take control from the other seat.

Happy shopping

Gooner

Kato, good comment.

I have a reco rack - but was under the impression it would last, as a number of design faults / parts were replaced with current technology. I guess you get what you pay for.

I think they are actually marzipan...

Sky, I've just spoken to Miles @FGS and he has 2 RHD new racks in stock. The company that used to make them went bust but he's tracked down the tooling and is having them remanufactured so these are brand new racks,

Haha what....

I've got my hands full rebuilding my car and fixing a friends 89 Esprit, so I can drive that to the Lotus Gathering, since mine won't be ready.

But JAE does have the kit to rebuild the rack, and it is too difficult to do.

What exactly has to be done Travis? Or did you mean it is not too difficult to do?
