oil cooler removal

hello everyone. i'm going to take the oil cooler off as a friend of mine says he can repair it (and for free) any tips or tricks to getting them off (hoses)

Use penetrating fluid on it soaking for ages to try and held reduce the chance of wringing one of the threaded sections off. use a spanner on the ali nut as soon as you can (if you cannot get to it at the start), help take some of the turning strain off the cooler by levering against the oil supply pipes.

Whilst taking mine off, I knackered the tabs on the cooler holding it to the chassis mounts. So, I accepted a new cooler was in the offing and disconnected it from the filter end. Even in the vice, however, I couldn't undo the hoses at all - WD40, plusgas etc etc. I'm guessing the different metals reacted. I even risked heating the joint, to no avail.

I ended up having to get a new cooler and new hoses. - £100+ I must say, they look quite dandy. I got them from SJs since buying separately elsewhere left me in some doubt over the fitting sizes and it wouldnt have been that much cheaper.

I ended up breaking one of the bolts off in the oil cooler.

And then I stripped the 5/8" BSPP thread when removing the large flat nuts that hold the cooler in through the front bonnet floor.

Be very very carefull, I ended up with two new coolers (bought at SJ) in the end after trying everything (penetrating oil, cutting the nuts etc) to remove them without breaking them. After removal of the coolers pieces of the 5/8 studs remained in the hose couplings. These I removed chemically with the use of a NaOH (potassium hydroxide) soltion after a tip of a fellow forum member. Also see my AC renewal thread.

i will have a look and see if the repair is possible with it still on teh car

Consider epoxy paste, the sort you would use on copper pipes etc, just make sure you degrease the cooler first and try to scotchbrite the are to aid the adhesion.
