Which oil filter?

Recommended Posts

Chaps, whos had experiences with different oil filters...any ideas which to avoid, which are good, any changes in oil pressure, rattling on startup from drain back etc.... I ask as I was considering using a K&N oil filter for its super filtration..but then thought will that affect the oil pressure if its filtering to such a high level...ie impeed flow? Does the original Lotus filter have an anti drainback valve in it? There is a good price on genuine filters at the min from a chap Ive been speaking to.. ideas are welcome!

The OE filter does have a drain back valve in, but because the filter is horizontal not vertical, it doesn't take much time at all to drain.

I used a fram filter on 2 occasions, both times I blew my oil cooler apart on cold start up, however, this will not happen on yours as the early S3T didn't have a Thermostatic by-pass valve like the 82 onwards (mine has now :) )

I would say, that if you fit a very effective filter, the holes may clog quicker, needing to frequent the change of the filter.

If you are like me, changing the oil and filter at the most of 3000miles, (usually around 1500miles) , then a good basic filter will do.

If you change the oil regular, while it is draining, an inspection of all the water, oil and fuel hoses can be done, also the condition of the belts and any grease points.

regular maintenance made easy :)

I have avoided 2 major catastrophes by doing this!

I tend to use Pete @ PNM's filter as he buys them from one of the previous Lotus oil filter suppliers so they are identical in size / fit , although they are black now, and cost around £8 from memory (not forgetting Full forum members get a discount from PNM too :) )

Here is the link to the oil filter study http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilters/index.html

I would never use Fram. I subscribe to Purolator Pure-One
