Help to see what this pipe does?

Hi all, I'm just changing the fuel tank breather hose on an SE turbo, I fitted a chunky one before and since found the proper pipe at SJ sports cars. Anyway as I'm getting the pipe off on the off side this little black pipe popped out from some where?

I've traced it back to a point under Neath the charge cooler where it plugs on to something which has a slight oil leak around it?

Can anyone identify what this does and where it should go?

that is the hard line hose from the plenum to the MAP sensor.  The MAP sensor is located under the body arch near the right hand side fuel filler release solenoid.

 There are bolts through the body arch when the hatch is open, that will release the bracket that holds the MAP sensor and Boost pressure transducer.

 

Here is a photo of the bracket removed from the body, you can see the black pipe to the MAP sensor.

 

The bolts can be see here on the right side, through the painted part of the body

 

make sure to check the condition of the rubber boots that that hard line plugs into.  If those are cracked, it can cause issues for the engine.

 

The oil could be from elsewhere, but if it is from that rubber elbow, then that means you have a lot of oil in your intake, either from blowby, or a missing crankcase oil separator.

 

 

There is another similar hard line there in that location.  There is a tee from the vacuum pump that connects to the vacuum hose to the EBPV and the Throttle jack in the rear relay panel, and then the Tee also has a pipe goes forward to the cabin heater vent flap controls.

I've been checking for updates on here and googling for info, I've read about the crank case breather mod on lotus esprit world so will get on to that next to prevent any issue building up.

Tommorrow night I will be re fitting the pipe and checking the rubber boots as advised.

I've got my car on show this Sunday with a car club along with a couple of parade Laps at a racing track in between the British touring car races so wouldn't have wanted it to throw up a problem and me not be able to make it, I'm checking everything I can to get a problem free run out.

Might be a silly question but I also managed to pop that pipe off the plenum end when removing my boot floor the other day - I noticed that the rubber elbow was cracked at both ends and would of course want to replace it. Question is, is it a standard part of some sort or? Where would I procure one of those?

 

Here in Stockholm I'll most likely have to turn to an obscure rubber tubing specialist if it isn't a bog standard automotive hose part....

If the tube is the same diameter as the metal pipe off the plenum, couldn't you sort it with a larger diameter piece of tube that fits tightly on both the MAP tube and the plenum offtake if you can't find a preformed elbow?

Pipe back on, both elbows looked ok, odd how on start up it ran at 2000 revs for a couple of minutes like on a choke? its never done that before so dont know if the pipe would be related to that? gonna further investigate the oil mist next week, looks like ill have to whip the charge cooler off to have a proper look, it's done 36,000 miles and likely to have never been cleaned in the engine bay so the mist has had plenty of time to gather so hopefully nothing major.

The only issue I found was a huge spider living in the rear arch, after a stand off, he won and can stay there !

I guess I better use the car a little more to blow the cob webs off ha ha.

The high idle at startup is most likely your exhaust back pressure valve (EBPV) operating correctly. If it has never done that before, it may well be related to the pipe and the pipe may not have been connected properly. Others will come along that are far more savvy about that than me.

The EBPV is there to assist getting up to operating temp quicker. Just a butterfly valve in the exhaust.

I thought the high idle was controlled during warm up by the throttle jack, not the ebpv???

The throttle jack and EBPV are used in tandem; when the EBPV is in it's closed position the throttle jack opens up the throttle to compensate. The system is not used for the entirety of the engine warm phase just the first couple of minutes. On the Delco management cars there are also ECT, MAP and rpm conditions that affect it's use.
