Hi what are your thoughts on tracker?

I am insured with Aviva using CCI as my broker and have just done a change of vehicle to insure my new evora because of the jump in value.(40k and above)they insist on having a tracker being fitted to be insured for theft after 28 days

Not really sure I want one fitted but looks like I may have to..

Has anybody else had one fitted and what make and model did you go for?

Thanks

Rob

When I bought my first one almost 7 years ago it was over £60K in value and like you insurance insisted.  I had a local specialist car electronic company fit the RAC Trackstar I think it was called but they had recently been taken over or something.  There always seems like lots of confusion exactly which model everybody had fitted. (There has been a number of these threads)  I see that my annual DD is to Traffic Master if that is any help.

Although I haven't required it on all 4 due to dropping values I have always had it transferred as I owned it anyway and doesn't cost a lot to swap cars.

As to whether there is any value in having one fitted there are many points of view but mine has always been the sooner it is alerted to going walkabout the better, especially as I'm only in the UK half the year.  Oh and it does work as twice I've forgotten to mention to them it was being picked up or dropped off by low loader............ and I had the call within a mile of the driver starting the journey. I hasten to add the car wasn't broken down.

If it's of any use, I fitted one of these:

 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Spy-Car-Vehicle-Realtime-SMS-GPS-GSM-GPRS-Tracker-Tracking-System-Device-TK103B-/221783167135?hash=item33a34e909f

In it's most basic form, it'll tell you where the car is at all times and can text you if it moves more than N metres or moves at more than N mph. All you need for that is to power the unit from somewhere.

You need a SIM card from GiffGaff - if you buy the above and want it you can PM me your address and I'll post it to you.

It a £5/month cost for the top-up.

However your car is worth a lot more than mine and your ins. co. may insist on a professionally fitted device. I would ask them. Mine was happy to accept "a tracking device"

I was told by many insurers that I required a tracker for my new V6, like you I didn't fancy the idea of one.

I shopped around a managed to find a few brokers (insuring via Equity Red Star) that didn't require one.

Rob, have you tried Classic line? They apparently cover up to 6 UK track days a year, you can have European ones at additional cost, found the price competitive for specialist cover and don't think they require trackers.

I know this is a bit of an old thread, but just want to say that internets and TonyKL's recommendations are spot on.

I'm changing my Elise for an Exige V6 S, and wanted insurance that includes track days. The Elise 220 is currently with Admiral who do a great price but no track days are included (I have 16 years no claims, and was paying less than £600 for 12'000 miles a year including business mileage.) For the Exige, I rang up REIS and got quoted nearly £1000 for 3000 miles a year (I said yes to pretty much all the extras, so it would have been great highly featured insurance), which included my 6 track  days, but they said that I needed a tracker because the Exige is > £40k (only just at £45k).

I have a tracker with the Elise and it is a total waste of money. The Lotus garage recommended I used the battery powered Tracker Retrieve so it doesn't drain the car battery, but only the CAT5 variant is good enough for most insurers. And the CAT5 Tracker sounded like a PITA (also it's like £700 and you pay a fee of £200 per year...) I was speaking to a car dealer the other day, and he said criminals were getting wise to trackers too.

Following TonyKL's recommendation, I tried calling Equity Red Star (ERS now) but they only deal with brokers. Then I called Classicline and the quote was nearly half the REIS quote, they don't use no claims bonus (so I can use this with my comfort car now - which is a chipped 220PS Audi A3 TDI Quattro), and most importantly I don't need a tracker. And Classicline are brokers for ERS.

I would like to fit a MetaTrak to Evora. I have MetaTrak already on another car and it works well.

If anyone has experience of having a MetaTrak or similar fitted, who did you use? My previous install was my local audio guys. They want £480 to fit a MetaTrak 7. On-line, prices are around £350 to £400 and 'they come to you' but I would rather use a trusted team, so will go with my local guys if no recommendation from others on here.
