Esprit Turbo project car - part3 - the further continuation

Recommended Posts

Car seems to be going back wards. Have removed the drivers seat most of the trim and the headlining has had it. The handbrake cable mount is rotten so also need to get the drivers sill off. Hopecat some point it starts going back together! The carpets are very good on the passenger side and very dirty in the drivers side. I'm changing the trim colour to Bond spec, so it will all have to come out at some point. Want to get it back together temporarily so I can drive it!

Chris, do you have an electronic engine rev limiter? If so is it a small box with a plug in to the loom and please can you post a picture? Thanks. There needs to be a lot more pictures of the Turbo car as the service manual is very sparse. There nothing in there on the turbo or the instrument connections.

Hi Fabian

Was looking at the posts re the tools in the toolkit, and noticed this. Not sure I answered it - so here you go if I didn't - and if I did, another picture is always useful th:thumbup:

Thats the inertia cutout switch, not a rev limiter. These cars didnt have rev limiters, unless they had limiting distributor rotor arms originally as the twincam had.

Replacing the leather on the body shell part of the fascia under the screen might be interesting. Not sure if the screen has to come out for that?

It can be done (see @slewthy's history somewhere).....but it's soooo much easier with the screen out.

hardest bit is probably cleaning the surface to get get it properly flat before gluing the new piece on....

Here's my problem the front screen is smashed. A new one will be very difficult to remove as Dinitrol is almost indestructible! I'm in a race to get driving this summer then in a year every nut and bolt will be off for the respray. I have cleaned all the old trim with a Rug doctor machine and upulstory cleaner. It's very good and the whole thing is now clean.  The trims not going to win any competitions, but it doesn't smell and it's very clean! ???? not too embarassing to drive.IMG_1557.thumb.JPG.3ef85e9a0959ae9e612228e89cdddf41.JPGIMG_1554.thumb.JPG.90abdd26a60b136e7b628b283e752799.JPGIMG_1553.thumb.JPG.2304b6aec66c6fffaefc67dfdf8f9227.JPGIMG_1556.thumb.JPG.dce0abfd27d2dcdb81a555f74777db02.JPGthe carpets are still drying but it is a massive improvement you can't really see in the picture.

The leather bits were cleaned with a solution Steve Fulcher supplied. I havnt done anything else as I will be redoing it all in a year.

Yep of course your right, but it's a Bond thing!

I've a feeling the electrics are going to be a bit of an Epic. There are a lot of wire connectors not connected to anything, and I found the flasher unit under the seat! Good job electrics are my favourite bit!

Ps the electric aerial is shot, anyone sourced a replacement? The heatsheild is on the way from Merlin motorsport. A bit of Origami and the heatsheild will be back!

My understanding of the car has improved with a bit of study. I found no rev limiter. Bought black screws from eBay for the trim. All of the originals are rusty.

I could give you an answer thats only 50% likely to be correct. My passenger window switch works backwards although both switches are fitted the same way up :)

Looking carefully at a brochure (is that conferring?)....they are at the bottom....though I guess it may depend on which day of the week it was when fitted ?

Here's the window circuit, no relays or fuses. My S1 now has relays and it's much better. So two reasons for it not to work, no power or the motor has had it. Wonder what I can look forward to?IMG_1563.thumb.PNG.8d273897665918eb01bfddfe4e5d2a30.PNG

Well the windows are working, sort of. The alignment of the glass is poor and the window felt is rotten. A simple matter to,clean the motor and rebuild, having had six months of continuous door building and dismantling. Have got the lights to pop up they were winking because somebody had put the control arm on 180 degrees out. The light switch isn't working. That I believe is on another relay to the stalk. Should keep me busy!

Found an issue with the exhaust manifold, a small hole! So that has to come off. There's a lot of things in bits now!

Thats not good. So there is the decision of whether to try to find a new original or go "Alunox".

If you were planning to take the engine out at some point it might be worth bringing that forward. Worth starting to soak the manifold nuts in penetrant as soon as possible to avoid the problem with studs turning and pulling out the head threads which some engines had, including mine.

Yeh have to find one. The only good thing is the manifold has been removed before and has newish copper nuts. It's a pinhole and could be welded. I know a company that specialises in cast iron welding. Just another problem to solve.

Have just repaired the passenger door. As predicted the pushrod had popped off the internal door handle. It's now wire locked! I really recommend this unless you wish to keep taking the door apart.

The above was for the S1, the Turbo is now in many many bits, there not a lot left if the drivers door. The window frame was broken and riveted through the fixing holes where the frame is weak. Either a used frame or welding! The door was put on incorrectly without the friction pad in contact with the paint and the Aerial is broken!
