Steam clean? Yes or no...

Has anyone had their engine steam cleaned? There is a detailer in my neck of the woods offering this service. The engine remains in the vehicle. I was wondering if anyone has 1. Had it done and 2. Had any problems afterwards.

Can really clean up all the dirt and oil from the engine. 👍

Can also do a very good job of cleaning electrons out of your engine management.  Stopped doing this long ago as multiple sensors were phased in by manufacturers.  It's possible with care and under low pressure, but can lead to issues, some of which could manifest days later.  The 9xx engine management is pretty simple, so less of a risk, but still...

The engine bay is well used to vibrations, heat and water. Connections are IP automotive connectors. These are not pressure washer safe - merely splashproof. 

In reality - folks have been steam cleaning and pressure washing engines since the dawn of the motorcar. Just be aware what you are doing - don’t leave the oil filler cap off, don’t fill the air box with water..... rocket science it ain’t.

Keep the engine cover fitted, then you won't be able to see the dirty bits. 🥴

 

Mindful of @Sparky's advice, you can just spray any grimy areas with a product such as GUNK, or a soap solution with de-greaser.  DAWN is a great product if available on your side of the pond.  It readily cuts grease.

 

Let soak 30 minutes (beer break!) then spray warm water to rinse... Repeat if necessary.

Then, fit the engine cover and have another beer. 🤡

Don’t steam clean it then. Simple really.
