Your First Car?

A black 1950's Austin A35 in 1971...I read a couple of car mags and hacked the rear wheel arches out, fitted a sidewinder exhaust and painted flames down the side.

With Dulux...

I used to watch alot of hillclimbs and sprints and so my first car was a 1965 Hillman Imp. It ended up with full works aches 235x50x13 inch tyres on revolutions, and a completely reworked engine to rally/race spec running twin Weber 40's. It was completely stripped of any superfluous rubbish including rear seats, door panels, roof lining, carpet ......and even the heater! I resprayed it in Porche guards red and it sat about 4" lower than stock and about 8-10" wider. I loved that car and used to race anything going including Mexico's and worked on RS2000's and win ............. but the roads were alot quieter then. Boy was it quick! It took me over a year of weekends and the loss of my girlfriend to finish.........she was cute......bummer!

1986 peugeot 309 GR 1300cc profile in silver. Owned it for about 8 months before the need for speed kicked in and I bought a 309 GTI. Never looked back(slower) since.

1979 Ford Escort mk2 1.1 (Pop plus, I guess the plus was it had no trim to speak of so was lighter and didn't use as much fuel).

Oh yes, I fitted (it was the 80s, that's my excuse) wide wheels to it from a Cortina, the Ford shell desgin ones.

I paid

1986 MR2

post-216-1187212616.jpg

Turned out to be a total rustbucket hastily patched up for sale, had 121,000 on the clock and about 9 previous owners, but it was the first one I saw in the 'right' colour and I was young and naive in the ways of 2nd hand cars :blushing: :respect::evil:

Drove like an absolute dream though

A red Triumph Dolomite Sprint - not a terribly sensible choice, as will become clear. Absolutely adored it and spent every minute of my spare time out driving it.

Unfortunately, being a typical young/reckless male driver I suffered from the usual delusions of invincibility. The result being that the car met with a very nasty end involving a corner, a wet road and a concrete lamp post some six months later

Needless to say, as a young (and stupid) know-it-all I'd also 'saved' money by insuring it Third Party Fire and Theft only  My father's "I told you so" comment really didn't help. A lesson learned.

Austin metro city X

Bought from my local dealer for peace of mind.

Had it inspected.

Cut and shut.

Forced dealer to give me a 3 year old metro.

Was already rusting.

Took me to a lot of bands though.

Nothing special mind.

(first car i ever drove was a spitfire, i'm glad of that at least)

The first car I bought for myself as opposed to one my dad bought me was a 1968 Elan S4 DHC. I really should have bought the S3 FHC I saw before but I had my heart set on a Series 4 as it was lighter.

Cost 800 pounds and 35 pounds a month to insure.

Had a few issues. Clutch wasn't releasing properly when I picked it up because the release lever had come of its fulcrum. Had to pull the engine forwards to fix that. Had number 4 piston's top ring break up and find its way to the top of the piston. Took the engine out to fix that. Replaced the doughnuts. Driver's door top hinge had its fibreglass delaminate so the door fell off when I opened it once, much to the amusement of the Browns Lane security guards. Had the timing chain tensioner screw thread strip in the front cover. Machinist at work made a new insert and we carefully re-tapped the cover to the new size. Drove home that night with it fixed. On a winter's day the snow pushed to slave cylinder pipe up against the exhaust so it melted through. I remember taking the starter off one day but I can't remember why. Battery had a problem with going flat and I bent the inlet valves when I mistimed the cams once. I was rushing and I used to feel the crank pulley and timing marks on the front cover to make sure they were aligned (too difficult to see) but this time I picked up a casting mark instead of a timing mark so it was too advanced. That was the one time I did not rotate the engine twice by hand before trying to start it. Bought a new hood when someone ripped the old one when the car was parked in Coventry city centre. Eventually sold it as I could not afford to run it.

I loved that car.

P.S. When I sold it I found the chassis was rotten. Nothing like LEF in those days.

My first 'car' was actually a Bedford HA van (Reg CDL 510V), given to me from my Grandfather. Sadly had to let it go after 18 months due to the passenger door finally falling off due to excess rust !

Oh Happy days :yes

First car I bought was a 1983 Ford Escort MkIII - absolute rubbish. Never had a Ford since
