A customer (mate) called me today, he had broken down just off the motorway with a cascade of electrical problems until basically everything died and the engine would not restart. Sounded like a depleted battery, but he had just done 25+miles of motorway and the charge warning light never appeared. So I set out in the rescue-Range Rover to try and get him going again. Along the way I suddenly remembered @Sparky telling us about the time he went out to rescue an Esprit stranded with similar problems. And all he needed to do was plug in the ignition wire to the alternator.
So that was the first thing I checked and sure enough, it was dangling under the alternator. Reconnect, read the battery: 11.8V, verify the charge warning light comes on as I turn the key, give it go (before getting out the jump leads) and hey presto, she's alive and kicking again. Mate was mightily impressed and very happy to be able to continue his drive home. I could have done without that hour spent on the road, but was still smiling when I got back home. 😎

That was a while back!  Brands Hatch, if I remember correctly.

Yup, my car.

Some numpty had knocked the excitation wire off the back of the alternator the previous day. No idea who did that, though. 🙄

On the plus side, i now know that an S4s will run for approximately 50 miles on a fully charged battery before the gauges start doing a dance, and the engine dies. On the M25.
