Crankshaft Timing Mark

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,im about to start replacing the timing belts in the next few weeks and thought i would check the crankshaft pulley for the timing mark.Watching Pancho's video on Youtube he turns the pulley clockwise until he see's the mark.Unfortunately for me my pulley looks different and has no markings on it.Theres only two holes(im assuming drilled during balancing).Does anybody have any idea how i can get to 10 degress TDC on cylinder 2 without the marks? Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Some of the early TV dampers did not have the notation.

The markings are aligned to one of the 4 vanes on the rear of the pulley which is sometimes also marked in white.  It is locking of this vane with the crank position tool that confirms the position of the crank. The drillings in the front of the pulley are for balancing and not related to the other markings.  If neither of those are evident, then you will need to use the cam positions to define the firing stroke of cyclinder #2.  These position are all detailed in the Section ED Service Notes.

You will need to remove your cam covers in any case to perform the belt change correctly, so you can rotate the crank through each of the vane positions to determine the correct alignment of the cams.  Remember that there are two revolutions of the crank to each full cycle of the engine. Once you have the correct alignment and have locked your crank, you can engage the cam position tool to confirm the correct cam timing.

I would read the Service Notes very thoroughly to understand the task ahead.

Any parts that are not clear on you can question.

You could go old school and remove the spark plug in no2 to see when it gets towards TDC and then see which vane lines up. Then see if the tolerance pins fit. Might be 360 degrees out so need to rotate the crank a turn to get pins to fit. Once you’ve established the correct vane follow the service notes exactly.

@andyblackman777 This is a good suggestion especially for those who have a reluctance to disturb the plenum and cam covers.  The video that Gonzalo made also describes a shortcut method that does not involve loosening the cam pulleys.

Glad that you sorted your crank positioning.

The black vacuum hose is for the HVAC unit and runs back through the backbone chassis. You can see it here - #12 on the parts diagram

Good morning everyone,my camshaft pins have arrived and i was planning on using them this weekend.Anyone know which colour to use first? and why are there 2 colours?Im assuming one set is thicker but when do i use them?thinner for initial setting im thinking

The thicker red 4.7mm pins are for setting the positioning of the camshafts. The slightly smaller blue 4.2mm pins are to allow a tiny tolerance change when setting the tensioning of the belts and some very minor movement from that position. The smaller dia. pins are then used for the cam positioning checks during routing servicing.

You really should read the Service Notes where this is all explained in detail.

The intake piping for the turbo's has been simplified with a K&N filter mounted to the intake of pipe of turbo, and i have installed the cooler for the turbo's water return line. Its been like this for 6 years and works great in the Australian summer.

i tried today, and i can tell you 2 things. One its not as simple with the engine in the car and two you need an extra person to help out.I ran out of time today because i noticed that the clamp holding the rubber hose on the power steering pump was broken and there was oil dripping down the hose. Will swing past the shop in the morning and sort that out first.

It runs to the EGR manifold under the plenum

It should go via the one-way valve to the charcoal cannister.

hi,i have repaired the leaking power steering clamp and found the charcoal canister(thanks Mike).Since most owners are using all different types of frequency measuring tools i have opted for the Sonic brand from the UK.But its only as good as the values you input.I know two which are easy(width of belt 22mm and distance between both pulley centre lines 145mm) but i dont know the last one.Theres a table in the instruction manual but its only a guide.Im using GATES belts and they dont have  the value listed.Does anybody know it? i think its referring to the weight in grams of the belt for every meter.
