From a "Rolling Stone's" review...

It was one of the few small U.S. films to genuinely wow audiences at this year's Cannes Film Festival. And somehow, as it transitioned from a limited opening to a wide release over the weekend, in a landscape dominated by superheroes and foul-mouthed sausages, this critically praised, minor-key gem has slowly emerged as the unlikely sleeper hit of the summer.

Best film I've seen this year. Trust me.

I agree with @Iconic Ride in that this is a great film. Went to see it with my daughter on Friday night and to be honest it's brilliant. The story is very strong and the performances are excellent with Jeff Bridges putting in one of his best performances, ever, and I thought the closing 5 minutes really closed the ending, in a way most modern films don't..

It's a modern day traditional western - everything is there including the strong social commentary and the relationship between Bridges and his "partner" is brilliantly done.

My comments and observations are my own, invariably "tongue in cheek", and definitely, sarcastic in nature. Therefore, do not take my advice, suggestions, observations or posts seriously or personally and remember if you do, do anything, that I may have suggested, then you have done this based solely on your own decision to do so and therefore you acknowledge responsibility and accountability (I know, in this modern world these are the hardest things for you to accept) for your actions and indemnify me of any influence, responsibility, accountability, or liability, in what you have done. In other words, you did it, so suffer the consequences on your own!

I'm looking forward to going to see the move about the pilot who landed his plane in the Hudson saving everybody on board. The one with Tom Hanks in it as the Captain. Trailer looks great. I'm struggling to understand why he was/is being investigated so fiercely?

All we know is that when they stop making this, we will be properly, properly sad.Jeremy Clarkson on the Esprit.

Looking forward to it myself, Michael, for rather obvious reasons. The combination of Eastwood (as Producer and Director) and Hanks promises to make for a top notch flic. FAA accident investigations are, by their very nature, always fierce by design. No stone is left unturned, and the trailer implied that there was some question about his decision to go for the river instead of attempting to return to the airport. There are a number of reasons why that was likely not a realistic option. I won't go into them here, and even if I did, it would just be another "Monday morning quarterbacking" "20 20 hindsight" exercise by another armchair "expert," though I'd like to think that my background would give me at least a minor advantage. In any case, the purpose of Hollywood movies is to make lots of money, and over dramatization is a tried and true methodology to achieve that goal. I go to the show to be entertained, not to pick apart the inconsistencies that may surface in the telling. Hopefully they got most of this story "right."

SWMBO and I recently saw The Beatles, 8 Days a Week, a Ron Howard film about the early touring years. Quite a nostalgic trip down memory lane. Well worth a watch if you were (or still are) a fan, or even if you're not. Got a big kick out of the final frames of the movie, depicting the Fab 4's hasty post concert exit out the back of Candlestick Park Stadium (San Francisco) in their armored car...the very one I deftly managed to lay a paw on ( I was a younger man, and oblivious to the concept of one's mortality) as it barreled past in the night, not realizing that it was to be their last touring performance ever.

Sounds worth a watch.

I watched Bridge of Spies last night in 4K. Not as visually impressive as The Martian of course in the same resolution although the sets were very good, but a great film. Spent a couple of hours after researching the story and the film was pretty accurate.

Bridge of Spies was indeed an excellent film, and though Hanks played the central character, Mark Rylance provided his usual riveting supporting performance as well. His role as Thomas Cromwell in the T.V. series "Wolf Hall" completely blew me away,  and I'm usually first in line for any movie he's in since.

I really hope Gareth Edwards finally gets it right. I think he's the most overrated director on the planet, his Godzilla was atrocious.

Also very, very few films actually benefit from  a 4K screening. I am struggling to think of more than a couple which are genuine 4K products.

My current display is 75" and I deliberately wanted one which is 1080P rather than UHD. It's perfectly adequate for my own setup

Can't wait! My number 1 film of 2014 has a sequel and just in time because after watching the original every saturday evening when I get drunk, I may know most of the dialog! And as we all know "I am Groot!"
