Lotus have deleted the fog lamps on a V8 to allow extra air to the oil coolers as the V8 runs the oil very hot. Any added cooling is of great benefit to longevity so I trust your new rad allows for more cooling :)

Hi Bibs,

The V8 does have a real challenge with controlling the oil temperature. I

Thanks Dan,

This is nothing like as creative or pioneering as the Audi V8 projects of yours and Hillys, but there is so much to do - even on a standard car !

Cheers,

Hi Mike,

Watching as always with interest I am really intrigued by the brake cooling ducts. This has got me wondering if they could also be applied to cars with the oil coolers still in place and have a positive impact?

Despite the warming effect of passing air through the oil coolers the air will still be much cooler than the brakes and therefore would aid cooling. I expect the difference with and without oil coolers in the path is likely to be negligible.

How are you planning to route the hoses to the brakes, is there space in the wheel arch and do you need a back plate behind the discs?

Do you think adding brake ducts behind existing oil coolers would slow down the airflow enough to impede the ability to cool the oil?

cheers

-Chris

ahhh, Mike -now i see what you mean with the mentioned break system air ducts !

That conversion should work, and with an single main oil-cooler you will have one 'possible leaking one day' pipe less

you're so fast man !

that's only some days from your note *thanks for advice -I've ordered the parts from that catalog* to delivery.. .

I bed it will be in within one day :)

Bud I'm a little worried -do you really think that flexible air-duct will work for more than a few km on track !? It looks as if it does hit the rim on inner side... .

Quiet weekend at home, but I did manage to get a few odd jobs done.

In preparation for the arrival of the new wheel bearing, I seperated the old bearing from the hub.

f_DSCF0001m_e331c02.jpg

f_DSCF0002m_28d526d.jpg

The inner race proved more tricky - in the end, I made some slots in the sides to get it off.

f_DSCF0005m_f7fec29.jpg

I also prefer to run the coolant header tank mounted independantly from the rear luggage deck. You can test drive and fault find without having to remove the rear deck etc. Knocked-up a bracket similar to the one that I used on my last BRG V8-SE.

Hoses are ready for the new oil cooler, so hopefully Posty will bring me goodies tomorrow.

There is still a fairly long list of things to do before the engine is ready to be started.... I must have been kidding myself about getting it going last week !

Cheers,

Mike S

Todays progress.

The lower valence went off for painting - should be back by the weekend.

Posty came good with the oil cooler - this time, the correct size (34 row, over 40cm wide)

f_DSCF0008m_361cd88.jpg

Set about creating the brackets to hold the top part of the cooler in place..... trial and error, but ended up with a good spacing between the oil and main coolant rads.

Before final installation, I took a few minutes to blow out any small crap in the coolant rad.

Pshaww.....I once got my wife to help me check if the brake lights and turn indicators were working correctly. It's a team effort, right Mike?

This is a really terrible question to bring up (now that the oil cooler is already in place), and most likely confirms my utter ignorance in such matters, but might not the the new oil cooler's location directly in front of the radiator (and knowing how hot the oil can get in the Esprit) as opposed to the two (albeit smaller total area) coolers original "non-obstructing" locations cause a significant decrease in the coolant radiator's ability to disapate the coolant's temperature as effectively as before? You mentioned some "calculations" earlier in the thread. Can you elaborate?

Mike, I'm fully aware that you must have thought this through prior to installation, and, of course, the A/C radiator (on my SE anyway) is also positioned in the same line of fire with apparently no ill effects, but is there really sufficient airflow to deal with all three requirements? Would this new arrangement work adequately on triple digit days?

Cheers,

John

There will be a knock on effect that cooler oil means much cooler water too but I'm sure Mike will elaborate more .Remember the G cars had a single larger oil cooler in front of the main rad too.

Hello mike,

once again a very well documented project with oustanding work performed.

Maybe this is an idea for your next project when you need some extra/replacement instrumentation:

Mike,

I see you've blocked off the EGR outlet and the air injection valve is gone. Is that what a non USA engine looks like?

I am curious how you arrived at 50% effieciency for the radiator, when the A/C and possibly intercooler heat exchangers are in place. I have been trying to arrive at a number like that for the new replacement radiator to accompany the new heat exchanger for the intercoolers (V8). The intercoolers will introduce 38,000 BTU per hour at a continous max boost (1 bar) level. I can't get any hard data for heat exchanger tube & fin core designs from any of the custom radiator fabricators here in the US. So far I have a fabricator who will take the stock radiator and add to it the 38,000 btu/ hr heat load add another 15% heat load (stock was marginal) and then add another X% for the "stacking ineffiency" I was going to use 75% effiency. So your estimate of 50% effiency is very important to me.

Thanks,

Wayne
