Is the petrol smell a "feature" of all Carb Turbo's, or just the one's I own ?

I didn't smell it when I drove it back from Kent, but this weekend when I had the top off and windows down, that old familiar smell appeared again.

Its a feature of all esprits with rotted tanks, leaky filler caps or perished breather hoses. Other than that there should be no petrol smell at all!

Could not agree more with steve, Should really get this checked out as the end result can be pretty scary as you have probably seen some of the burnt out car pictures of past owners worst nightmares..... Hopefully its just the fuel tank rotten breather hose problem, think there is a link on lotusespritworld about it, May be a rusty tank if so well worth the effort and expense of putting alloy tanks in that you know will last.

I was thinking about this the other day because most of cars dont get used all year round and the metal tanks where not the best design especially with the crap foam or water storage sponge as it should be called on top off the tank. Is it better to store the car with full tanks would this make any difference with regards to stopping the internal rust  Also check the main fuel supply pipes and unions. in fact check everything from the tank backwards to be on the safe side.

You can sometimes get a petrol a petrol smell if shes running rich and the windows open and a slight winds in the right direction but when motoring along there should be no smell of petrol.

With windows/roof open, airflow in the cabin increases, dragging in the smell. With luck it's just the breather hoses, but you need to check it out toute suite.

It is recommended that you do not smoke in the mean time.

Mine stunk of fumes, the breather hoses were fine I was totally confused. Then the mighty "sparky" noticed that the pipe that goes to a fitting on top of the drivers side tank had a perished end, cut it off and plumbed it back on, smells fresh as a daisy now.
