Gearbox lifting

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I've borrowed an engine crane and I'll be hopefully hoiking it out tonight, is the little loop on top of the case a lifting point?

Where is the balance point?

Thanks

Rich

Loop on top of the case? I cannot visualise the part you mean, but you still should go for ropes or straps under front and rear areas.

I've normally lifted the gearbox with the engine attached when craning it or manually when on its own but I'd guess the balance point is approx 4 inches in front of the drive-shafts. The differential has a lot of weight, the shafts run a fair bit of the length of the box, there's the 5th gear hung at the back, so there's a lot to counteract the ali casting of the bell housing.

Interesting. Never done it that way - just stood over it, wrapped my arms under it, pulled it back and clear, then diagonally down to the right and out from under. Handy to have help, but I usually do it on my own.

Similar to Sparky, I typically lift it up and out in one movement - once it is slid back free of the clutch.

You know it never occurred to me to drop it out the bottom!

It's out now thanks, the loop is at the top near the back of the box. Came out with no fuss, just printing the rebuild guide before popping it open.

Cheers

Rich

yep i had this problem, theres quite a bit of play in the shafts whait i did was wind it in using a bolt either side but i dont reccomend this as you can crack the housing (seen this happen on a friends car) ensure everything lines up 1st

It's Oogies turn to boogie
