sport button

Not sure what the NA Evoras are like without the sport button, as i am addicted to the sharper throttle response, and change in exhaust note. I have had the car 6 weeks now and utterly adore everything about it. I spent 12 months mulling whether  to sell my s1 160sport and upgrade , and kept convincing myself that i wouldnt be satisfied with a more sanitised car,. I was wrong non sport mode  = sanitised .... sport mode = fun fun fun . i am approaching middle age , never did i think i would stand in the garage with a cup of coffee and just look at it , my wife is starting to get jealous

Depends on which NA Evora you have - I have the sport pack so get the sport button which improves throttle response and you really notice it, but then I also have the Lotus Sports Stage 1 exhaust which means it is always loud - until I get the 2bular setup when it will be louder still.  Why would you ever want the exhaust to be quiet? Neighbours, pah, they're there to be annoyed :)

Glad you're enjoying the car

I look at my car all the time. I look at pictures and videos of the Evora on my computer, all the time. I too am middle aged and my wife is well beyond the jealous stage, she just tells me off for watching too much of what she refers to as "Evora porn"!  haha....

I don't know if it's the onset of senility or just that I need to try harder, but I'm ashamed to admit that I hardly ever push the Sport button. In my defence however, most of my driving is divided equally between in town crawls and motorway blasts with a nice cross-country B-road being an extreme rarity. I do use the ASBO button (opens the exhaust valve independently) at every opportunity though so maybe the 'yoof' in me isn't quite dead and buried just yet.

Get out of here!!!

Sorry!!!! :sofa:   I'll hand back the Evora and get myself a nice little Suzuki Wagon R or other similarly suitable vehicle for my sedentary driving style.

IMHO the throttle feels broken without sport mode enabled! Turning it off does make parking less exciting though! :)

When I picked my car up on the first day of ownership it was 3 deep in the workshop and I had a very tense time manoeuvring it out! -I didn't realise at the time that having just been shown where the sports button was, I was in sports mode!

Sports button is cool especially for the throttle response and the higher rev-limit. I wish I had on my car an exhaust valve (even better if separated from the sports/race button) like I will have on the new 400 because the LSS1 is a great addiction when driving around for fun (which is what I mostly do) but can become annoying on a long motorway trip.

I was lucky enough to get a few laps around Hethel with James 'Le Mans' Rossiter in an Evora and he didn't use the Sport button. When I asked why not, he said that he wanted the full pedal travel to be linear so he could better modulate it rather than exaggerated response at the top of its travel. Just something worth bearing in mind when on track.

Very interesting point! Having never driven my car on track I can only imagine that being true:blush: . On the road the sports-button makes the car a lot more "nervous" and "alive" (especially on N/A ones that are a bit weaker than superchargeds at low-revs) and makes you feel (and often not just feel ;) ) you are going at a lot faster pace. But obviously it doesn't give the car any more HPs so it's just a different response curve for the electronic accelerator pedal. I can suppose that on track it could make a very sensitive foot like Rossiter's one feel less detail and linearity that are very welcome characteristics for a track-car.

Am I the only owner that doesn't like the sport button?

I'm still getting used to my new car, but I don't like the sharper throttle response.  It may work well enough for an NA, but on my S, I think it makes the throttle difficult to modulate.  If I'm trying to ease the power on, so I'm up to or just above the limit of traction, as I accelerate out of a wet bend, I've got much more chance of getting this right with the standard throttle map.

As I'm having a moan, I may as well complain about the standard throttle map too.  Although this seems more linear (ie it feels like I'm getting half throttle when the pedal is half way down to the floor), the response is too slow, so heel & toe changes are difficult with sport mode off, because you can't blip the throttle.  Even if you stamp on the throttle, so you hear it click onto the floor (then come off immediately) from low revs, the rev counter doesn't even register an extra 100 revs.

& the brakes... I could probably work around the poor throttle map if the brakes weren't so bad - as you press on the pedal, after you get over the initial almost nothing happening zone, they're way too sensitive, so it's very difficult to maintain a constant brake pressure while prodding the throttle.

My other complaint about the sport button (& this is a criticism of every manufacturer's sport button) is it changes too many things at once.  This is very annoying.  4 separate buttons would be so much better, because I almost never want all 4 sport characteristics at once.

And here was me gonna learn how to heel & toe and basically your telling me it doesna work in an Evora. Damn, I'll just have to focus more on tge twisty bits then and put the time into learning how to corner even faster... ;)

You can do it - it's just not as easy as it should be, especially in non-sport mode.

Anyway, if you're learning, you'd be better off practicing in a car that isn't going to cost you £3k+ for a new clutch, & it will be easier to learn in almost any other car, then adapt your new skills to the Evora, once you've got the hang of it.  Do it.  It makes driving more fun, & if you're doing it right, it will make your £3k clutch last a little longer too.

Good idea Tony. Watch out for an ancient Ka 1.3 runabout screeching and a hopping down a street near you as I learn! ;)

That is really interesting to know. Have driven my car on track a couple of times, always in sport mode and found it very hard to control the throttle.

Another reason to get a 400 as it has an exhaust button.

One  other important thing the sport button does is raise the rev limit from pathetic to merely a bit lower than I'd like. While it is a lot more torquey than a 2ZZ,I do miss 8k+ revs! IMHO even with the supercharger the Evora only really feels like it's trying at about 5k rpm and then it's all over!

My relationship with the sport button has evolved significantly. When I first test-drove the car, I barely noticed the difference. Too much else to think about! Shortly after buying the car, I became addicted to using it as it makes the car feel more lively. Now I don't bother so much as I prefer the more linear response. I do try to be as smooth as possible even when pressing on a bit. If it is on, it annoys me at town speeds as it's that little bit harder to be really progressive. It only ever sees any use now when I'm in full attack mode :D

Don't worry, Andy, it works just fine. The Evora is an easy car to H&T in, with or without sport button.

Thanks Jonny. I'll still practice in the KA as the clutch in that is about 26p!!!  hahaha.....
