Sweet sounds

I was lucky enough to drive a BMW i8 yesterday. The sound it made was intoxicating - deep and hormonal. When I got back, the car critic that let me drive it highlighted that the car had a tiny mini's engine in the back (hybrid front). 

This makes me reflect on the note that the early esprit produces. More like a 1970's mini 

Have people fooled around with mufflers etc to try to produce a more inspiring note? She ain't no rocket but I find if the sound if aggressive and pure, it adds to the theatre of driving, even if you're not traveling that fast. Any thoughts?

I hear the cherry bomb exhausts help with the sound a lot, as well as changing to K&N style filters. I'd do the filters myself if I wasn't trying to stay as stock as possible.

Dave, Mark's car was running on cherry bombs - sound properly agressive imo

I would suggest that the sound the i8 makes is synthesized by the stereo possibly?

i8 sound is artificial pumped  through the cars speakers.
