Max speed limit anywhere in Jersey is 40mph.
Town/built areas are 30, Near schools (& some odd places) are 20, Country lanes where tourists might walk (never come across any tourists on them though) are 15.
Some years ago they extended some 30 limits "out of town a bit", and I have to say I think they were quite sensible to do so, as a lot of those areas had houses with exits straight on to the road (no pavement).
Around my corner of the Island they've extend the 30 again. Since doing so there have been more accidents. Would they consider raising back to 40 - I don't think so.
I find myself driving along a road with no exits, no dangers, at 30, getting bored. Consequently I'm driving on "automatic", looking in fields, gardens etc. as I trundle along - because IT'S TOO SLOW FOR THE ROAD. Not good for the concentration. I'm sure others do the same.
As Richard said there are a number of factors that need to be taken into account; speed is only one them, but it's one pushes the correct political buttons and consequently becomes the scapegoat.
When you go past a school at throwing out time, you should slow down. Why should I slow down outside that same school at 2am?
I'm all in favour of good conditions, no dangers (like junctions etc.), well maintained car, alert capable driver - go as fast you want. Anything else & speed you be adjusted accordingly.
Trouble is, people these days seem to take less & less responsibiity for their actions, which means the rest of us are legislated down to whatever low standard seems appropriate.
I also agree with Ian's original comments. Certainly seems like double standards & a way of raising money.
No points for up to 86mph - Good - as long as it's in the right place at the right time.
