Upgrade or exchange V6S

DrTroy

Recommended Posts

Hi all, what would be the best route when you start to get bored of your V6S, upgrade or exchange?

My car has just clocked 30k so exchanging could be a little challenging...

However there are loads of mods and reading the build threads makes that route quite tempting.

Wondered what others have done, thanks in advance :)

Also depends what a dealer thinks yours would be worth and how much extra you have to put “on top”.

upgrading a v6s to say cup430 power / handling is always cheaper than buying the finished article.

as Imran says it depends what you use the car for and what’s boring, it may be that a lotus isn’t the best car for your cash!

I do like the newer look, i.e. engine cover, wing, front service cover thingy. The exhaust could be noisier :) it's a shame there isn't a SSC UK stockist, I'd love their back box and intake. However not sure they can be used with a KT remap....

At the end of the day the 380 Cup, IMHO, is the best Exige ever produced, closley follewd by the bog standard 380.

For 9K plus what u can buy a used 380 for, you can have 460hp, massive torque and the best looking Exige made....

Thats not to say I don't like the rear of the V6S, especially when running Gregs Halo lights, as that ass is class... ;)

cheers

Mar

just my 2p worth...

There is - Hoffman’s are their UK agent (although they won’t necessarily keep everything in stock).

I got in touch with them sometime ago as I noticed the pictures on their site where SSC pictures but I've had nothing back. I got myself added to a mailing list for when they get parts in but again that was a while ago and I have heard nothing since.

I concur Hoffman’ may be the importer but they do not follow up on customer enquiries or for that matter do Hangar 111 with Komotec.

Neither are proactive in advising customers who have made enquiries and you need to chase them. Does not exactly fill you with confidence though !!

If you are after an amazing noise and not planning to track it the take look (listen) to 2ublar valved exhaust.   Had one fitted last month and holy sh*t it is just filthy....when you want it to be or totally placid on the motorway when cruising at around 80

I'm definitely not the top.

I must apologise to anyone who has been messaging me, it has been insanely busy at the workshop this year.  As a for instance, we are currently scheduling about 6 weeks ahead.  I am aware there are a few people waiting for pricing on the KT kits for 4x0 cars, which I do now have, and want to get all the info onto the website to save repeating myself in emails etc. I've only got two days at the workshop this week coming, so will try my best to do something, and respond to some of the messages.  After easter things look like they might get a bit easier, and I hope to get some desk time back to catch up with my backlog, rather than getting my hands dirty with spanners.

It's a difficult one - and I seemingly change my mind about whether to swap my V6 for a 380 on a weekly basis. I think if the right 380 came up I would be sorely tempted as I think the 380 is the best Exige ever made - it looks fantastic.

For me for a £20k premium over mine (which is 50% increase would have to have)

- full carbon pack

- nitrons

I still struggle a little with the price of them compared to mine for what is fundamentally the same car.

I think if you want to upgrade to EXACTLY 380 spec with the Lotus parts you are close to £15k. If your car is worth £40k you are near 380 pricing anyways, and I think a £5k difference to get the upgraded shifter is probably worth it.

If you want the look and are happy to substitute with Eltech / elise parts rather than Lotus pieces you can make a massive saving on a 380 - but you've still got a V6.

You obviously won't get much more for the parts being on your car when you come to sell so you would need to remove them, whereas the 380 is a 380.

The added bonus of upgrading your V6 is you can do it in stages - as opposed to putting down another £20k / finance in the here and now.

Lastly the other slight fly in the ointment of the 380 is the lower rev limit - I think that would slightly frustrate me.

Ask me again next week and no doubt i'll be looking for a 380 on pistonheads;)

The shifter situation could change at any time if Alitech eventually bring out their v2 shifter... or until someone nuts like @GFWilliams proves it can be done with lotus parts 😉

I think the other benefit is the extra oomph that a ‘potential’ 20-30bhp could give...

The only negative of the 380 is the Rev limiter it would be a problem for me as would the noise (requiring a quiet exhaust).

What, so the poor guy explains just how busy he is, the backlog of work they have (no doubt as a result of their excellent reputation and quality) and it does not fill you with confidence?  I tek you've never been busy with work or your work has never been in such high demand? Ever tried a Porsche?  😂😂

Sounds like the v2 is not going to happen at all ... Now if people are committed, I know a specialist in France (they have already done few V6s Exige ) who are partner with the company doing the ShiftR, it is a bit of a drive, but still very interesting, and price wise it is reasonable...

I have the dilemma myself, however being broke made it easier!

I really like the styling of the carbon bits on the 380 and 410, but not the cup cars. the wings looks a bit naff to me ( to each their own ofc )
I also much prefer the rear light arrangement of the S/350.

Having gone through some hassles with carbon parts and seeing others having the similar issues with all brands, I think I'd just save up and buy a 380 over smacking carbon onto an S/350.
As I have the 350, I'm okay with it and will just add power, but for your S you'd gain more than just power with the better shift linkage etc and updated interior - whether that's worth anything to you is a different story.

I found myself quite "bored" of the car just commuting. Open both windows, blast through tunnels, all sorts of silly things, but really made me fall in love all over again.
Maybe you just need a new exhaust and some fun!

In my case going for a cup solved everything, I was thinking of buying anything else than a Lotus, and finding that cup with nice spec and exhaust solved all problems ( after driving it I mean, not just because it is a Cup whatever ) ... Increasing the power is good, but somehow you want to improve everything equally ... maybe everything else before the power actually ... very personal thing, but in any case, you should go to dealership and drive stuff.

Did and have not heard anything!!

I messaged via their website on a Sunday eve to enquire about the cost of the chargecooled unit and had a response by 9am the Monday morning.

Cant ask for better than that!

Gentlemen,

To put this in context !!

Not mentioning individuals but both Hoffman’s and Hangar 111 had both sent me emails in January after we had some ongoing email discussion and conversations on performance upgrades. In both cases they had confirmed they would be back in touch shortly.

Neither did and  that’s a fact.

Everyone  is entitled to an opinion on whether that is good Service or not,  and to comment that they’ve received great service from them etc:

Perhaps  they were too busy to respond because they are good at what they do and very popular. I can only go on my experience.

The point is I did not receive a response and you can disagree with that but it does not make you correct.

I have no issue with either company and commented on the thread from DrTroy who had received no communication back from Hoffman’s

If there were other Komotec or SSC UK dealers then I would have a choice to go to them and with the competition it may improve responses
