Taillight Disasembly

Hi folks - been a while 🤘

I'm playing around with a few ideas to get better illumination out of the taillights and wondering if anyone out there has successfully removed the lenses from the taillight body? I don't see any fasteners or any obvious way they are held together. So before I have at it with a screwdriver or something to pry them apart, anyone successfully managed to separate them?

The units I have are original to the car and in perfect condition, and would like to keep them that way 🙄

TIA

Easiest way to get to better illumination in my view is to change the standard bulbs to LED bulbs. Done that with mine and they are plenty bright. Easy access from the boot. If you change the indicators to LEDs you have to change the indicator relay as well or else they will not work correctly.

Are the reflectors inside the tail lights deteriorated? Doesn't sound like it. Just replace the bulbs, as stated.

Buy quality LEDs. Our first set of LED bulbs caused radio interference when on.  🤬 We got ours from DiodeDynamics.com, they helped me walk through the selection process.

I've upgraded to LED bulbs, yielding a remarkably bright light. As I recall working on the lamps several years ago the lenses appear glued to the casing thus I didn't dare attempt to pry apart. May have managed to swab the surface of the reflectors to some extent, certainly did give the lenses an external polishing.

Cheers

Sorry for the late reply folks - I forgot I posted this question. If these assemblies are glued together, I don't want to risk cracking them. Was playing with idea of LED panels behind the lenses, sort of a retro-future mod, but will go for the LED replacement bulb option instead.

I do have another idea of converting the tail lights to a brake/DLR set up, just need to source twin filament bulb holders that will work.

If they're glued with silicone soaking for a few days in kerosene softens and relaxes the bond. That's how I separated my S4 tail lights.

When I added lamps on my G-car, I think I used some generic BA15 sockets. (#1157 bulb here in the USA). The mounting is a simple bayonet style.
