Gearbox problem 2nd gear

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Issue with 96 Esprit V8 Un1-27 box.

Whilst driving today 2nd gear started to crunch slightly, this didn't stop it selecting gear at all,

However whilst driving medium speed up a hill a heard a crunch it felt and sounded like it popped out of 2nd gear but didn't.

Now when I select 2nd gear the engine revs freely as if the car were in neutral. No 2nd gear.

All other gears select and drive fine.

I first thought it may be linkage / selector trouble but it looks like the problem is internal.

Has anyone experienced or heard of this before?

Does anyone know of a place for Esprit gearbox rebuilds in Sydney  Australia

Don't forget these transaxle were used in many kit cars so you should try asking on kit car forums & also Renault independent garages may help.

Good luck 👍

Cheers,

Speak to Simply Sports Cars. They're the Australia distributor for Lotus, very experienced with the cars and lucky for you, based in Sydney 👍

Thanks for the reply,

I spoke to them and they only do late model Lotus cars.

Hi All,

Does anyone know if if the Un1 -16 can uprated and be mated up to the twin plate bell housing for the v8?

I did wonder where it got to. Used to see it regularly. I'm in CH. There's a guy, Ian, in GH who's took his box apart and rebuilt it. He's got the GTO c/r kit. I've dismantled a few but haven't done a full rebuild yet. Just collecting parts including a Quaife torsen and hopefully a c/r gear set down the track. Rebuilt quite a few other boxes though. Are you a "hands on" guy? They're not a complicated box.

Hi Danny,

Yes I do  a bit of work myself, but I'm between garages at the moment and have never done a gearbox before.

I recently had the timing belts changed at Cremorne prestige which left the car with a shuddering/ shaking hesitation from 2 to 3000 rpm generally cruising in 4th gear with the need to change down for the car to accelerate. I thought it could be ignition breakdown. I was going to take it back to them to sort when 2nd gear went.

Has anyone out there used Cremorne for work on their Lotus?

I was thinking of them to do the box there.

No. Without knowing what's broken and could be churning about in the box I wouldn't.

You could try a Renault specialist for the box rebuild.

Sounds like your cam timing  could be off if the poor running happened following a cam belt change??

I would have thought any gearbox shop would be able to fix your gearbox. I fixed mine myself. Finding the parts maybe tricky though,

Hi Anthony,

Sorry for late reply have been off for a few weeks.

No that's not my Lotus. Was it just recently that it was at Cremorne?

I have recieved most of the parts I need for the rebuild. I couldn't find the needle race bearings though.
