Indeed. However, the series of comments (posts) that accompanied this shot ran about 50/50 as to whether or not it was "doctored," or primarily a function of use of a telephoto lens and the deceptive "depth" factor induced thereby. I like to think it's "real," if a bit closer than the program called for.

My father had the honour of flying with the Red Arrows, one of the 2 that did the amazing cross over. He noted that whilst the wing tips may look to be in danger of touching when viewed from ground level, in fact there was a notable difference in altitude, just not visable from (crowd) level.

I'd guess different routines as it would have been back in late 60's or early 70's and flying Gnats, but yes similar spectacular and intricate displays.
