Decided to play with my new ultrasonic cleaner today and start on the carbs, still not decided what I’m doing with the car so did both the HC set and the E’s.

They came up pretty well after doing two 30min cycles per carb at 60 degrees, I’ll finish them with carb cleaner once I remove the shafts and bearings.

I had all the steel work plated when I did the gearbox and have the overhaul kits. Next job is a decent inspection of everything and order what’s needed.

With the weather being unsettled it was time to sit at the dining room table and tinker so built the carbs up post cleaning.

Pretty happy although I had to buy a fair few new jets, choke pistons, bearings and kits so not the cheapest build up. The HC set were toasted in the engine fire so happy enough they were saved ok.

Rebuild of the brake calipers next weekend I think now I’ve taken over a nice warm area 🙂 (She’s not impressed 🫣).

Nice job @LOTUSMAN33 Ultrasonic cleaner makes short work cleaning carbs. I use a mixture of water and lemon juice to get the alloy casings nice and bright. Just finished up doing a triple 40DHLA setup for the 1970 240Z. Night and day difference.

Try putting the brass bits or whatever they are in Cillet bang. Tip I got from the Eurocarb guy. They come up like new!

Slow progress but taking the paint down layer by layer, the yellow will be with the DA but from then on I’ll do it by hand making sure all the lagoon blue is gone.

I’ll stop at the yellow coming off over winter then get the proper prep underway in the spring before heading to the paintshop.

It certainly looks different now, part of me still wishes I restored it back to how I owned it in the 90’s.

For those of us outside the Cillit Bang market, active ingredients;

Sulfamic acid (chemical formula HSO2NH2)

Included in Cillit Bang because it’s good at cleaning metals and dissolving limescale. Sulfamic acid is used on a large scale by industry for these same reasons, but more importantly it is involved in manufacturing dyes and pharmaceuticals such as antibiotics and anti-cancer drugs. Sulfamic acid is also found in household products such as toilet cleaners.

Phosphoric acid (chemical formula H3PO4, food additive E338)

Phosphoric acid is found in fertilisers and water softeners, and is particularly useful at cleaning metals -- it is widely used as an industrial metal cleaner. This can be seen in some Cillit Bang ads, in which an old coin is rendered shiny.

It can also be bought as a DIY product, generally in the form of a gel, which can be used to remove rust. Phosphoric acid is generally regarded as one of the safest acids for use in regulating pH in manufactured items – so much so it’s even used in skin-care products

C9-11 Pareth-6

A powerful surfactant that’s safe enough to be used in skin-care products. This is the ingredient in Cillit Bang that removes grease and grime. C9-11 pareth-6 is even strong enough to remove the sticky traffic grime from cars and lorries.

Cillet Bang does clean metals effectively, however for electrical components only with care, carefully cleaning afterwards, and even then, only marginal success.

I think there is a far better product for that. Definitely available in the US, but forget its name.

Spent some more time sanding the body this weekend, I now know why it was painted in 1978 as under the white the lagoon blue had been keyed both sides.

Its a slow job, the tailgate is now back to the original primer with just a couple tiny spots of pink gel coat showing through, this is easy compared to the body as pretty flat.

The original paint job was not prepped well as the majority of the blue is still present including the lacquer.

I want to get the car down to gel coat ideally then get the body coated in Upol Reface so I can guide coat it back before primer and top coat.

Looks like the passenger door mirror area has had some repairs on the door which will want some rework, the holes needed glassing anyway as I’ll be fitted an original pod mirror.

Unfortunately my 5” Orbital sander died today so a new one is required before I can carry on, I’ll get it down to blue then block sand it back to gel coat I think.

Time to get back on my old car now spring is here, I’ve been busy on the white car so this has taken the back seat.

I’ve been tripping over this engine for months so it was time to get the thing in place doing it my favourite way from the top as opposed to the below method. The gearbox would have gone in had I been able to find the release bearing clips for the fork so replacements now ordered.

I have started the mods to fuel inject the car with the throttle bodies fitted and engine sensors. ( I will do a post as a guide to fuel inject these cars for anyone else who wants to do the same, I’ve had a few issues already to overcome).

I have started changing the chassis bolts as well in readiness to fit a new chassis in the future, for now I plan to get it driving as it’s blocking my white car in the garage. 🙂

No worries Steve, I have most of the components now so will do a step by step photo guide with prices for budgeting once it’s running.

I’m building the car as my daily hack for work so doing a bit of a restomod now with a tad better economy.

A bit more progress, it’s a slowly transforming back to its origins.

Wolfies all stripped and polished with some budget tyres to roll it about on and get it painted.

Sills now fitted and the wheels, the bodywork continues and that’s all I want to say about that endless task, needless to say I could get away with murder as no longer own fingerprints 😁

Chassis now patched up and given a healthy coating of black with several applications of lanoguard to help slow further corrosion, it’s good enough for the MOT now letting me remove the Irish number plate. New rack and brakes installed.

Gearbox is in along with the exhaust manifold, I’ve had to weld a boss in the intermediate pipe for the lambda sensor.

Still lots to do in the engine bay but new loom now together and laid out roughly so going through the exercise of mounting all the sensors. 

Nice having a coil pack with no distributor sat under the fuel source. I need to remove the C pipe and weld up the otter switch hole as the fans will be controlled via the ECU now.

I had to remove the inlet manifold again to drill/tap the extra holes for the air control valve inlets and vacuum outtake for the ECU and fuel pressure valve (not fitted yet as awaiting fittings).

Hopefully first runs in a few weeks so fingers crossed 🙂🤞🏼

Yes I know a cam cover is back to front… 😳

I’ll sort that when I remove to coat with oil prior to its first run 😉
