I've been visiting the UK Wolf Conservation Trust a couple of times a year for the past few years and these are some of my favourites I've taken (although I've not yet put up ones from my visit this year)...

The trust takes the wolves out on walks in the local farm fields which the wolves enjoy - the wolves are on heavy duty chain leashes during those walks. At the weekends members with "walking memberships" join those walks (a walking membership allows you to join one walk a year).

While on those walks (subject to the mood of the wolf) the members get to "meet" the wolf, which involves getting close and rubbing/scratching the wolf's belly. Sometimes the wolf will get curious about the person and to learn more information about them will go to sniff their breath - we're warned about this and told to just exhale, and that's what's happening in the photo of the chap with the wolf looking up at him (I was lucky to catch that moment).

A lot of the photos I've taken while on the walks rather than while the wolves are in the enclosures and so in some cases I've edited out the chain . The first photo is of a handler in the enclosure with one of the arctic wolf cubs - as you can see the handlers have a great rapport with the wolves.

Very interesting. Re the precautions is that because the wolves are stronger compared to a similar sized mutt or because they are unpredictable?

I believe some of the precautions are a lot to do with health and safety regulations and conditions of their liability insurance. I know as part of the insurance requirements they're required to always have two handlers per chain at all times when out on walks, and at least one senior handler free roaming (i.e. not on chain duties).

Some of it is because of their nature though. The wolves are stronger than a similar sized mutt (the bite pressure of a wolf is double that of your average large dog I think, as one example, and they can pull quite hard if they want to go somewhere), so two people per leash seems sensible. Also they've not been bred as working animals/pets (part of selective breeding of working animals/pet animals is for behavioural traits) and although they're socialised they're not kept in a domesticated environment (so the handlers interact with them daily and they're taken out on the walks, but they live in large enclosures) nor are they trained like a domestic dog would be. I don't think the wolves are any more unpredictable - the handlers understand them well - but some of the known ways they can react means more precaution is warranted (esp. as people can be unpredictable)! The thing the handlers usually have to remind people on the walk about is do not touch the wolves on their heads or on their backs (dog owning people often do it without thought because the wolves are so dog-like) - some handlers can do that with some wolves because their positions are established and the wolves accept it, but for members of the public doing it there's a risk of it being seen as a dominance gesture and the wolf not liking it.

It's a shame I didn't hear about the place and join sooner - a year or two before I joined they were still letting members into the enclosures to interact with the wolves during visits. They stopped for various reasons (including the wolves at the time getting a bit less tolerant as they got older, and membership numbers increasing so having more people along for each visit). I think they are doing an enclosure encounter day with the newer young arctic pack next month though (I presume the wolves won't be leashed for that) but that won't become part of the normal visits and is a bit more expensive than the walking membership (and the walking membership allows you to have a guest along for free).
