Resurrection and development of V8 Project GT1

Recommended Posts

Brushed on.  There is a POR-15 Top Coat that will be applied before things start to go back together.

This is a 'one-time Gig'.  Not doing it again 🙂

Seized split spacers - not a job that I had been looking forward to, but in the right frame of mind to tackle it today.

First side took two cuts, second only one.

Both were blasted this time.  The trailing arms are being galvanised and the hub carriers will probably be left as is.

It takes a lot to bring me to my knees..... but I'm BROKEN !!!

Preparing to apply the POR-15 Top Coat and while inspecting I was unhappy with some areas of the surface finish.  I challenged the coating and it just peeled off !

I challenged a little more and honestly the adhesion was super-crap.  I followed the guidelines and did a pretty damn good job of preparing the chassis, so I don't know where it all went wrong.  The whole lot is coming off again...  I'm not impressed and now re-consider the whole paint coating route.

I did indeed use the Metal Ready prep.  The chassis got left a full week before the coating.

I kind help feeling that I did something wrong.... but I cannot see what it was.

POR-15 works best on rough, plain steel and can suffer lack of adhesion on other metals and galvanised steel. I assume you did not immerse the whole chassis for a week in the Metal Ready and the week was the time left after treatment. The problem is probably due to one of the following:

1) The suggested 30 minutes probably wasn't long enough to get a zinc phosphate coating.

2) An excess of zinc phosphate was built up.

Application of Metal Ready can be laborious when trying to get complete rust removal and / or a zinc phosphate coating and I have never found it particularly good at removing mill scale.

Time for the radiator pack, now that the rubber mounting bobbins and washers have arrived.

I've used products from a company called Buzzweld. I'm really impressed with the finish.

My son sent me some footage of my breakdown.... amusing to watch, but at the time I was super-pi##ed.

Apologies for the foul language but you can see that there is simply no adhesion.
