Peter, I would love to use your OBD scan tool to investigate a rough idle issue with my Y2K V8. Problem is the zip file is somehow corrupt/empty and I get error messages when I try to open it. Have tried several PCs (XP, Vista and WIN7) with no luck.

Would appreciate any help.

Well, apparently the error message that I was getting about the zip file contents was bogus. I tried it again on a Win7 machine and it downloaded OK. I ran the installer with no problems on an XP machine and the software looks great!! Took it for a test drive yesterday and created the csv file, so now I have plenty of data to dig into.

 

One question: When selecting PIDs, should there be a list in the drop down menu? Mine didn’t show any.

 

Also, for those using an ELM327 USB interface, the CP2102 UART driver for Windows XP that comes on the CD (v6.3a) doesn’t work. I installed the Vista version (v6.5) and after a couple of reboots it worked just fine.

Hi Graham, If you have gone into the 'Select PIDs' tab then their are 6 drop down boxes that will display the PIDs that the ECU/ECM says it supports. The start up setting of these drop down boxes is '0 - No PID Selected'. This means that the program hasn't connected to the ECU/ECM yet and hence doesn't know what PIDs are supported. I would normally expect to see a list of PIDs in the drop down box if you were able to connect and had recorded data to a CSV file. Have you checked the csv file in Excel or in an text editor to check that it has data?

 

Did start use the 'Read All' option in the 'OBD Data' tab to record the csv file? If yes did you see the PIDs changing on the display?

 

I have to say that I always dread driver problems on the ELM interface, as I don't have the skills to provide much support. I'ts great that you were able to resolve your problem and posted how you achieved it. Thanks.

Hi Peter, I tried it again tonight and all I had to do was hit "Refresh PIDs" and then after 20-30 seconds all the PIDs were available in the drop down menus. I had a blast trying to record maximum boost and a few other things. The software is awesome. Thanks!!

For those that use a mac, the software works with full functinality using parallels and Vista.

A great bit of software, thanks Peter for the hard work. One addition which would help is a code lookup function, or is it there and I've missed a trick somewhere?

Hi Stuart, Thanks for letting us know that the software also works on the Apple windows emulator.

 

When you wrote 'code look up' do you mean the ability to see what a given error code means? If yes, then when you select the 'MIL/Errors' menu option it will display the stored error codes and their respective error code text in the 'Error Description' column.

I have tried to download the file to both XP and Win7 and in both cases I get file is invalid.....

 

Tried saving and opening from directory and I am told the Zip is empty..!!

 

Has anybody any ideas - am I doing something wrong..???

 

Am trying to get my rebuilt engine started after 3 years of the car being in pieces and I get pops bangs and the odd backfire but no joy.

 

Am desperate to see if I have any simple error codes/faults.

             I just downloaded the zip file and installed it, so the file seems to be OK.

 

You are however not the 1st to say you have this problem. All the other people with the problem eventually managed to down load the zip from here. Can you download the zip onto another computer and try there? Alternatively, pm me your email address and I'll email you the zip directly. Could be a virus checker issue. I use AVG and it always warns me when ever I download a zip file.

Recently downloaded OBDII + Lotus Esprit V8. Got the software to work with an eBay China sourced ELM 327 / USB / OBDII cable.  My cable package came with a software CD that was unfortunately smashed in shipment.  I was able to load the required drivers (for Windows Vista in my case, but they seem to have others) from here and it all worked!

I have a rookie question that is confusing me.

Is 'Bank 1' in the software the Left Bank or the Right Bank of the engine (when viewed from the rear of the car)?  I have Bank 2 staying open loop after Bank 1 has gone closed loop. I have constant O2 output voltages of about 0.96 v on both Bank 2 sensors.  I think this is the right bank (or passenger side of my NA LHD car) that needs attention as we have determined we have a head gasket leak on the right side, but want to confirm before I proceed further.

Thanks for the great software.  I was able to track down a failure of fuse B7 from four fault codes and reset the CEL / MIL.  Pain in the butt to find and resolve this issue as I think the CEL would relight very quickly (without any codes read on my OBDII 3100 Code Reader).  Not sure why I could not see the stored codes on the simple generic reader, but the V8 software showed the codes correctly.

Sri, Bank1 is the right hand side looking from the rear of the car. The O2 sensor voltage should be switching between rich-lean, so if it's constant that's not a good sign. Good luck!

Funny how it changes between makers. I expected that Bank1 would be the right hand bank looking from the front of the engine.

Get a 4 cylinder. No confusion then. :P

Hi all,

I have a few questions regarding my V8 and OBDII. How do the lean features work? Also after having engine removed and refitted, should I be resetting the idle, O2 and other settings? Revs seem not to settle as quickly and it's running a bit rough since the refit. Not errors and O2 sensors seem to be doing their job, their readings fluctuate as normal. I've just fitted new plugs and I've also noticed that my thermostat must be jammed open so will fit a new one in next couple of days.

I have to admit, I am a bit rusty on the V8 as I haven't worked on it for a few years.

I've never had to reset any parameter. Just put it through the normal autolearn routine. Can't remember the exact details, something like drive it at a constant 40mph for 10 minute to re-establish all the basic values. Each time after it will refine the values.

Peter, using your software for the first time. Kudos, nice job. Still trying to become familiar with it and had a question? I have emission tests where I live and I'm trying to figure out how to tell if all the checks/test are in a 'ready' state. I'm used to ODB scanners that just say ready. Here is a shot of the screen that I 'think' indicates what I am asking. All but the grayed out tests show 'complete'. Not sure what the grayed out ones are for. Anyway, thanks for the software, it's very useful.

Hi Tony, if you can get the Bluetooth driver on the PC to use a comm port between 1 and 16 then you should be able to select the respective port in the 'Config' section and it should work. Sadly, the software is developed in VB 5.0 and the MSComm object only allows the CommPort to be set from 1 to 16. I did attempt to port the code to a later version of VB, however, mostly due to my poor coding/design, to port it I would have to change many of the screens(Forms) and the supporting code (the newer VB version I used did not allow the same number of text boxes and labels on the Form). I suspect if I take the time to do an update/upgrade, that I might be more motivated to re-write in an environment that will run on Android.

I am having a problem with my 1997 V8 Esprit.

It's that dreaded time again (safety and emission testing...boo) and of course the check engine light is on.
I squeaked by last year, but not so lucky this time around.

I had 3 codes:
501- vehicle speed sensor (i believe bogus from dead battery)
451- fuel tank pressure (found a vacuum line off of the vacuum canister)
411- secondary air injection (found vacuum relay was not being activated, no air injected into exhaust) Broken wire, had to rewire it from relay. Now working correctly.

After some troubleshooting and repairs these are all cleared up. I reset everything and took it out for a drive. After about 30 minutes the MIL light came back on (Damn it!!!) Runs great BTW.

Get home and look for codes and there are NONE????
It is the MIL1 light that is on, the MIL2 is off (according to the software).
I can turn the MIL1 light off and shortly there after it comes back on. Car not running just in ACC mode.

So what does this all mean?
What is the difference between MIL1 and MIL2 lights?
What can set the MIL1 light but not throw a code?
I have a majority of the drive states set, but there are still a couple not set. Can this cause a MIL1 light?

I'm about to kick my computer, cables, car and the whole lot to the curb.  I can't seem to get Peter's software to run properly.   I've tried three different laptops with a wireless OBD dongle and only got pairing with one of them and never a connection.  I gave up on that and got a 327 cable, and tried two different computers with that  (win 7 & 10) and I only get very intermittent data transfer.  Yes, I've checked, double checked, and adjusted the config settings every which way possible to no avail.  I've tried both front and back OBD sockets.  Here's a video as to some of what's happening:

Those chimes are not me sitting on the keyboard or anything - happening without me touching anything.

All usually ends with a run-time error.
