The report on CNN I just read said the suspect is a Christian Fundamentalist and it was a protest at the way that Norway is becoming too multi-cultural. Seems an unlikely reason for such attacks. The bomb was bad enough but to go chasing after people so you can shoot them is unbelievable.

He's fundamentally wacko, that's for certain. But what do you do with someone who is so completely off his nut? The max imprisonment term in Norway is 21 years, so he'll be out at age 53 or so. Then what?

It really is just completely surreal to witness such an unfathomable display of evil.

The way I understand the latest stories coming out in Norwegian media indicate that the target for the shooting could have been almost anyone. The goal in itself is just attention from the whole world, as he wishes to use the coming trial as a "marketing excercise for his cause".

Seems the best thing now would be to simply deny him this.

As for the 21 years max improsonment, there is a type of sentence called "forvaring" (loosely transelates as permanent custody), where after an initial inprisonment of 15-21 years, the sentence can be extended an indefinite number of times in 5 year periods if the person is seen as a continued threat to society, effectively meaning a possible lifetime inprisonment.

I was so sad and depressed and angry to hear of this ; it`s classic terrorism : some kind of Religious fundamentalism as a natural basis for intolerance and dehumanisation of others (apparently we`re all made in God`s image but of course that`s never stopped `em !) mixed with a psychopathic or at the least, sociopathic personality.

The number of people who say their invisible mate-sorry, "God- told me to do it" as a justification for pure evil is a marked feature of these incidents. Killing grown adults with families to "save" unborn foetuses is a related evil phenomenon.

The moral : I`d like to ban all organised religions but realise that is not feasible or realistic, so....keep your religious/murderous ideas to yourselves and your (real) mates don`t inflict them on other more rational people.

The thing has to be kept in isolation for the rest of its life. It will not last an hour if left with inmates. It could be a live display (in a say 3-foot thick vitrine cage) at British Museum as an example of DNA malware.

Sane is far better.

Insane he could then be "cured" of the mental illness that lead to the actions and released from the institution as he's no longer a threat. Sane and he gets locked away in prison, possibly never putting the public at risk again.

Am generally not a death penalty advocate (unusual for a Texas resident, I know...), but in this case I can easily understand divergent sentiments. Since Norway will not impose this sentence, perhaps a suitable substitute might apply, such as racking, followed by a half day's crucifixion, and ending with display in the public pillory for a weekend.........or two.
