Upgrade today to remove Google ads and support TLF.

Pulled off the loose and charred original tape, left the rest in situe. Gave the panel a light coat of high temp carpet spray adhesive to assist with tack. The aluminium tape is like double thickness tin foil with an adhesive back, maluable enough to do corners and grooves. Took about an hour.

Got to find a suitable material to fab up the strut top heat shield. SJ make their own but buggered if I’m paying for someone else’s McGyvering skills.

Just read this on an RX7 forum of all places:

Heat transfer by radiation is proportional to the Temp of the source raised to the 4th power, minus the temp of the receiver raised to the 4th power. This is not a linear function; it is a very steep exponential function.

Lets assume you have exhaust pipes at 1600 F = 2040 Rankine
assume heat shield is 400 deg F = 860 deg Rankine
assume intake manifold is 120 deg F = 580 deg Rankine

Exhaust to the 4th is 17,310,000,000,000
heat shield to the 4th is 547,000,000,000
Intake manf to the 4th is 113,000,000,000

Okay now, the radiant heat transfer is proportional to the differences of those 4th powers.

Difference between header and heat shield is 16763000000000.
The difference between heat shield and intake is 434000000000

Sooo the radiant heat transfer from the header to the heat shield is 39 times more than the radiant heat transfer from the heat shield to the intake manifold (this is neglecting surface area and surface finish.) 

This is why heat shields are so important - they re-radiate out much less heat than they take in. The heat they do absorb is transferred via convection into the air flow passing by.

FYI the ring is no longer available as the last purchased was a few months ago.

Suspension, brakes, chipped, chargecooler rad and pump,injectors,ignition coils and leads, BOV, highflow cat and zorst, Translator and tie rods, Head lights, LEDs to tail lights and interior,Polybushes to entire front end, Rad fans, rad grill, front end refurb with aluminium spreaderplates and galvanised bolts. Ram air, uprated fuel pump, silicone hoses through out, wheels refurbed and powder coated,much more, all maintenance.

New idle valve arrived from Rock Auto today. Definitely a smaller pintle. Will report on difference over the coming days. Centre consol out reveals what’s left of a hacked out inner rubber. Why am I not surprised. New one en route. 

Spent the morning repairing a £600 (non repairable, must replace with new) alarm control unit for an Aston Martin that once cut open just needed a new internal battery soldering in £4 online.... Job done, alarm now fully functional.

Also repair3d a Smeg multi function microwave that had been butchered by a domestic appliance shop causing it to trip fuses. Rebuilt the trip switch casings with

Whoever invented this stuff deserves the peace prize. All in all a good mornings work. Now at the day job to pay for more Esprit goodies.

Special thanks today go to Swindon Alan. Feeling a little irked at spending £32plus postage for a bit of rubber i trawled the TLF posts and fell across a cross reference from the above stating a £7 GT6 gear lever gaiter would fit my car. Took a punt and ordered...

Boom!... I salute you Alan with the Starbucks egg nog latte I bought with some of the savings. Whether it stops the exhaust fumes is another matter.. the gaiter, not the egg nog.

It is always a pleasure to assist a fellow Esprit owner (even of the half powered four pot variety Shaun). Oh and nice to draw with Chesterfield in the 96th minute on Saturday btw, not sure if you care or not but if you do I would be mighty pissed off being bottom of the league...

It is always more of a pleasure to feel up Barry's rubber gaiters and man, do they fit well. Nice and tight and firm.

Haha. I watched Chesterfield briefly when I was at college because I couldn’t afford to go  to Derby County. It’s not a cylinder thing for me Alan. I bought the Esprit completely on a whim in fairness. I have been a petrol head since I was a teen and my first ‘proper’ car after Mk2 escorts, MG Metros and XR3is was an M100 SE at 24. I had a number of car programs on video and Clarkson racing an Astramax van in a yellow Esprit was one of my favrorites. When the actual car he drove came up for sale and I fell a cross it I knew I had to burden myself with it. After 6 weeks of slog she is now driveable (although handling is still awful...suspension for Christmas please ?)

I hadn't seen your thread before tonight Shaun but I am absolutely adoring it! No messing man, you are really going for it!

I have a 1982 Mini City E on the drive gently rusting away, waiting for the MG Metro Turbo lump sat in the garage to have its transplant. Nitrous, water injection and overboost have always been on the plan. I even have an original set of kicked in Cooper steels to hide the potential of a boring looking Mini. So I completely get you sir.

All the best Shaun, an S4 like yours needs a proper enthusiast as I am sure that Mr Kearley must be spitting feathers ha ha ha

Tyres....... if they are old or even oldish the handling will be awful. Esprits need decent rubber or the power will never go down and it simply won’t handle.

ps - don’t listen the the v8 jibes - the 4 pots are best - been there done that

Noted Barry. I have a feeling that the melted bump stop through missing damper heat shield, two weaping rear dampers, a front on its tiptoes and geometry set by Ronald McDonald may also be contributing factors.

 

Tick over rpm is massively better with the new IAC valve. No more 25000 revs at red lights. Does feel a little flat at the bottom end tho and still uneven at tick over. Will disconnect the battery for an hour at the weekend to give the ECU chance to relearn.

The metro turbo lump/mini conversion was most popular in the late eighties in our manor. That will give the local yoof in their type R Golfs a bit of a wake up.

Sometimes an item needs modding to improve its performance. I had noticed that the arse trumpets (for want of a better name) were allowing water down the sides and making the carpet in the boot damp. I drilled out the rivets and cleaned out the old manky gasket. Revealed with some clear RTV sealant but was not happy with how the edges had warped. I introduced extra rivets and plugged the rivet tops with sealant. Hose pipe test reveals a good seal. It ain’t pretty but it is now fit for purpose. Even my rivet gun is colour coded!

After many hours of wasting Company time on the web, and getting fed up with a wet boot floor carpet, I gave up trying to find new original drains. Yes, you could make them from alloy, although I ended up machining them in poly-acetyl, tapered the throat, and fixed them from underneath, with some nice flexy hose. Sparky fitted them too, and they do work well. I think the originals are still on the NLA list.
